0 c, TITLE: IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO TANKS FOR THE COLLECTION AND STORAGE OF RAINWATER FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention concerns integral, concealed rainwater collection systems for buildings.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION In my co-pending patent application no. 2003203990 1 describe a water storage system 2008-07-01 .H:\Specifications\fitzpatrick cap2. wpd,l I 00 for a dwelling having a water storage tank supportable at eaves height. The tank forms the soffit and fascia of the dwelling and is intended to store rainwater collected by the gutter.
The tank rests on a horizontal batten fixed to the wall frame of the dwelling and is additionally suspended from the roof timbers. Alternatively, the tank is charged from a mains supply and acts as a reserve.
00 8The purpose of this specification is to describe a variant of the water storage system NI 10 disclosed in the abovementioned co-pending application.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention provides a water storage system for a building comprising, a water storage tank supportable at eaves height which forms part of the soffit and fascia of the roof, cover means for covering the soffit or fascia surfaces of the tank, and means to support the tank using the structure of the building, wherein the tank is connectable directly or indirectly to the water distribution of the building.
The cover means may be adapted to substantially shield at least one of the soffit and fascia surfaces of the tank from ultraviolet rays. The cover means may provide structural support to the tank. The cover means may block access into the building roof by rodents and the like. The cover means may comprise a rigid sheet. The sheet may be manufactured from steel or other materials such as fibreglass which are impervious to UV light.
In a particular aspect the means to support the tank includes suspension means connectable to the structural timbers. In this way, at least some of the mass of the tank is supported by the suspension means.
The suspension means may support a gutter and the gutter may have an outlet which feeds rainwater to the tank. The suspension means may be a bracket capable of connection to a rafter or top plate and a wall stud. In a particular form there are multiple 2008-07-01 \SpcifcatlionsAtzpau ick.cap2.wpd.2 00-3o 0 suspension means and the suspension means provide mounts for a gutter. Additionally the inner edge of the tank may be supported on a batten fixed to the wall studs just above 's masonry height.
The tank may be box-like with a depth of 175-200mm. The tank may be a blow moulding with ports for connection to side by side tanks. The tank may have a port for connection to the building water using appliances which are situated above the sediment C level of the tank.

00 CNI 10 The tank may be retrofitted to a building using a tank with cutouts at 450mm or 600mm spacings to allow fitting between rafters, but may more usually be designed for incorporation during construction. The retrofitted tank may be a rotational moulding.
The tank may utilise ground supported cisterns located inside the building, for example occupying spaces between the piers of garage walls. Existing guttering and fascia boards, could remain in situ, and only the COLORBONDTM soffit would be necessary to conceal the tanks, and also prevent invasion by vermin and pests. It may be necessary to remove the bottom row of tiles to allow for fitting of support brackets.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS An embodiment of the invention is now described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an exploded diagrammatic view of a water storage system according to a preferred embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a side sectional view of the system of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective of a tank showing cutouts and attachment sites.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION WITH RESPECT TO THE DRAWINGS Referring to Figure 1, there are shown two water storage tanks 2, 3 which are 450mm 2008-07-01.H :S pecifications\upatrick.cap2 wpd.3 00 O wide, 185mm deep and 1750mm long. The tanks 2, 3 are supportedjust above a 115mm Sthick brick wall 4 to form the eaves of a dwelling.
Each tank 2, 3 has a hollow threaded upper outlet 6 and a hollow threaded lower outlet 8 projecting from one end. At the opposite end, each tank has been moulded with an upper dimple (not shown) and a lower dimple (not shown). The dimples act as drilling centre points for a hole saw. Holes are drilled on site to create open ports into which threaded outlets 6, 8 in adjacent tanks are fitted to allow communication between tanks.
00 After the threaded outlets are fitted in the open ports, the installer, through access I 10 opening 9, threads nuts onto projecting outlets 6, 8 thereby drawing the tanks 2, 3 together. The installer then seals this connection with silicone. The access opening 9 is fitted with a screwed cap to form a waterproof seal when installer access to the inside of the tank is not required.
Tanks forming the soffit and fascia at the corner of the roof are arranged at right angles and are fitted together by drilling holes in the side of one of the tanks to form open ports, and threading the tanks together in the manner described above. Alternatively, a flexible hose may be used to connect threaded projections 6, 8 with drilled end holes in the adjacent tank.
The top of the tank 2, 3 is fitted on site with an elbow insert which is connected to admit rainwater from a roof gutter into the tank 2, 3. The bottom of the tank 2, 3 is fitted on site with an outlet pipe to one or more walls. The outlet pipe is connected to a dual inlet cistern inside the building for appliances and taps.
The tanks 2, 3 are a blow moulding rather than being made of sheet metal in this instance.
This is because, rather than making a sheet metal tank, it can be cheaper and more efficient to make a plastic tank which is covered by a COLORBONDTM steel sheet insert The sheet cover 10 is provided to mask the soffit and fascia surfaces of tank 2, thereby shielding the plastic tank 2 from harmful ultraviolet rays. Covers may also be provided for decorative purposes. A separate cover may be provided for each tank or alternatively, when several tanks are abutted, a single cover may be used to mask the soffit and fascia surfaces of multiple tanks. 0 brick wall 4, are further supported by powder coated steel brackets 12 to match the COLORBONDTM cover. The brackets 12 are secured to wall studs 14 by screws 16 at rafter spacings. The wall studs 14 support top plate 18 which in turn supports rafters 0 The ends of the rafters 20, which would normally extend to support a fascia board to which gutter fixings and soffit panels are attached, are cut short so that they clear the tanks. The top portion of the brackets 12 are secured to the top surface of the rafters or C top plate by screws. The underside of the tank is supported on batten 13 fixed to the wall Ci studs.
00 CN 10 Referring now to Figure 2 and Figure 3, the tanks are rotational mouldings of two sorts.
The first has cutouts 22 at 450mm centres for rafter/truss spacing of that measurement.
The second has cutouts 22 at 600mm centres. Both sorts have dimples 24 for indicating the drilling sites to the installer. The tanks are mutually connected using nominal diameter plastic tube sealed by WALLACETM seals. A 505w seal of this type requires a 65mm hole saw applied to the dimple. The 50mm aperture is prepared and a diameter tube is sealed to both tanks from the outside. Access to the interior of the tanks is not required. Suspension lugs 25 project from both ends. When the tank has lugs it is a rotational moulding.
Referring now to Figure 4, bracket 26 has a step 28 which supports spouting 30 and a terminal hook 32 which embraces the edge thereof. The portion of the bracket above the step has a clip 34.
For buildings with 2550mm and 2700mm ceiling heights it is preferable to install tanks which are 550 W x 200 D x 1800mm.
I have found the advantages of the above embodiment to be: 1. The cover 10 shields the soffit and fascia surfaces of the tank from uv rays thus increasing significantly the life of the tanks 2. The cover 10 provides structural support to the tank thereby reducing distortion to the filled tank.

Claims (9)

1. Water storage system for a building comprising a water storage tank at eaves height which forms part of the fascia and soffit of the roof cover means for covering the outer surface of the fascia and soffit and means to support the tank using the structure of the building the tank being connectable directly or indirectly to the water distribution of the building. 00
02. Water storage system as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the cover is an L-section 1 0 sheet capable of acting as a UV light barrier.
3. Water storage system as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein the cover is sufficiently strong to act as a physical barrier to outside fauna seeking entry to the roof space.
4. Water storage system as claimed in any one of Claims 1-3, wherein the cover is sheet steel.
Water storage system as claimed in any one of Claims 1-4, wherein the tank has multiple side by side cutouts to accommodate roofing timbers.
6. Water storage system as claimed in any one of Claims 1-5, wherein the tank support means further comprises attachment sites for connecting the tank to the roof timber.
7. Water storage system as claimed in any one of Claims 1-6, wherein a horizontal batten connected to the wall studs behind the masonry wall just above the topmost course thereof bears part of the mass of the tank.
8. Water storage system as claimed in any one of Claims 1-7, wherein the cover is supported by brackets which are connectable to the roof timber and the masonry wall.
