PATENTS ACT 1990 COMPLETE PATENT SPECIFICATION FOR THE INVENTION ENTITLED: "A SETTLING AID FOR AN INFANT" This invention is described in the following statement: 00 CLAIM OF PRIORITY
O
SThe present application for patent claims priority from Australian Provisional Patent Application No. 2007902111 entitled "A SETTLING AID FOR AN INFANT", filed 20 April 2007, which is hereby expressly incorporated by reference herein in its entirety.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a settling aid for a newborn or infant. In a particular form the present invention relates to a settling aid that helps restrict the movement of an infant whilst attempting to settle the infant to sleep.
c-I 00 SBACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION As is well known, the swaddling or wrapping of infants is often employed to settle the infant so that they may sleep. In some instances, an infant will be wrapped tightly in a blanket or a sheet in order to restrict their movement. This tight wrapping ensures that the infant is kept warm and furthermore is less likely to inadvertently wake themselves by the movement of an arm or a leg. It is also thought that wrapping or swaddling an infant in this manner allows the infant to feel secure, thereby allowing the infant to relax and gradually fall asleep.
There are a number of drawbacks to simply wrapping or swaddling an infant in a blanket or sheet. First, the infant in many circumstances will be able to wriggle free and in the process free an arm or leg. Accordingly, the infant is more likely to wake once they are free as they are now able to move and disturb themselves. Additionally, they may become cold as the wrap is no longer wrapping their entire body. Secondly, with standard wraps it is difficult to wrap or swaddle an infant in anything but a standard elongated supine position. Furthermore, in utilising traditional wraps or swaddles, unsettled infants can wriggle downwards, which can result in fabric going over their faces. Specialised wraps or wrapping arrangements have been developed but these are usually no more than a suitably sized piece of material possibly having flaps or portions of material that are designed to wrap about the infant's body.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a sleeping aid for an infant capable of aiding in restricting the movement of an infant.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In a first aspect the present invention accordingly provides a settling aid for an infant including: a bag portion for enclosing a body of the infant; and 00 at least one swaddling or wrapping portion extending from the bag portion for wrapping about the bag portion to in use restrict movement of the infant within the bag portion.
Preferably, the settling aid includes a leg securing portion, the leg securing portion operable to secure the legs of the infant in a flexed position towards the chest of the infant.
Preferably, the leg securing portion is attached to a foot or lower end of the bag portion, the Sleg securing portion foldable upwards into a folded position and securable to the bag portion "1 10 to secure the legs in the flexed position.
00 Preferably, the leg securing portion includes opposed flaps, the flaps operable to be wrapped around the bag portion and attached to each other.

DESCRIPTION
Referring now to Figures I to 3, there are shown various views of a settling aid 100 for an infant in accordance with a first illustrative embodiment of the present invention. Settling aid 100 includes a bag portion 110 having a collar 111 that opens from the front via a zipper arrangement 112 having a material cover which extends down the front of bag portion 110.
Extending laterally from a top region of bag portion 110 are first and second wrapping portions 120, 130. Whilst in this illustrative embodiment two wrapping portions have been employed it would be apparent to those skilled in the art that a single wrapping portion of suitable size and configuration could also be employed.
Attached at a lower end or foot 113 of bag portion 110 is a leg securing portion 140 which in this illustrative embodiment is detachable from the lower end or foot 113 of bag portion 1 by a zipper arrangement 141. Leg securing portion 140 includes a pair of opposed attachment flaps 142, 143 each having engagement or attachment portions 145 formed of Velcro® to attach to each other.
Located within bag portion 110 are arm retaining sleeves 115, 116 that are attached to the inner surface of bag portion 110 (as best seen in Figure In this illustrative embodiment, the arm retaining sleeves 115, I 16 are located on opposed sides of the bag portion 110 for each arm but as would be apparent to those skilled in the art, only one sleeve for a single arm may be employed. Furthermore, in this illustrative embodiment there is an arm retaining sleeve 00 115 which is oriented generally across the body of an infant and a further arm retaining sleeve 116 which is oriented generally down and against the side of an infant but as would be Sapparent to those skilled in the art, the orientation or the use of general arm retaining means such as, for example by utilising suitably oriented flaps of fabric, may be varied according to requirements. In this manner, the infant's arm or arms may be positioned according to what suits the individual infant, thereby allowing the infant to more rapidly settle.
In another embodiment, bag portion 110 does not include arm retaining sleeves 1 15, 116 and in this case wrapping portions 120, 130 are relied upon to generally restrict the movement of C1 10 the infant's arms.
00 Referring now to Figures 4 to 7, the various steps in settling an infant using settling aid 100 are illustrated. The infant is placed into the unzipped bag portion 110 with the infant's back positioned centrally with their neck over the neckline of collar 111 and their shoulders centered between the shoulder seams. Depending on which arm retaining sleeve 115, 116 is adjudged to be most suitable for the infant, each of the arms are inserted through a respective arm retaining sleeve 115, 116 which after receiving the arms will function to reduce peripheral arm movement of the infant. Any movement of the infant's arms, once in arm retaining or settling sleeves 115, 116, will be further reduced by closing zipper arrangement 112. Zipper arrangement 112 may incorporate a zipper that zips the bag portion 110 in either an upwards or downwards action or alternatively incorporate a pair of zippers that zip together to open or close bag portion I 10 in either direction. As would be apparent to those skilled in the art, other bag closing means ranging from buttons, press studs to Velcro® are contemplated to be within the scope of the invention.
The settling sleeves are made from fabric composed of 90% cotton and 10% elastane which offers an extremely light, soft, yet durable sleeve.
For an infant that may be suffering from colic or wind pain the infants legs may be gently flexed (as tolerated) towards their chest and leg securing portion 140 may be folded upwards and over the lower region of bag portion 110 where the infant's now flexed legs are located (as best seen in Figure The leg securing portion 140 is then secured about the body of the infant by wrapping attachment flaps 142, 143 about bag portion 110 and securing them to each other by virtue of Velcro® tabs 145(as best seen in Figure The resulting flexion of the infant's legs promotes relaxation of the abdominal muscles which aids in reducing the symptoms of abdominal pain. When the infant is settled, the leg securing portion 140 is released, thereby allowing the baby to reposition and extend their legs if preferred.
00
O
O First wrapping or swaddling portion 120 is then wrapped about the bag portion 110 and hence the body of the infant and tucked beneath the second wrapping or swaddling portion 130 which is then itself wrapped about first wrapping portion 120 and bag portion 110, thereby effectively swaddling and wrapping the infant within settling aid 100 (as best seen in Figure As would be appreciated by those skilled in the art, settling aid 100 fits an infant's neck securely with a soft collar Ill and a zipping arrangement 112 that extends up to the edge of collar 111. The amount of gentle tension applied to bag portion 110 by wrapping portions 120, 130 will counteract any movement of the infant. In this manner, an infant cannot S 10 physically get their hands out of the bag, thereby ensuring that the infant will settle faster as
OO
00 C they are warmly and securely contained within their environment.
Referring now to Figure 8, there is shown a detachable anchoring tongue 180 which may be optionally or in addition to securing portion 110 such as described earlier be attached to settling aid 100. The end portion 181 of anchoring tongue 180 may be tucked under the infant's mattress to function to restrict movement of settling aid 100 and hence further restrict the infant's ability to move.
Referring now to Figure 9, there is shown a settling aid 200 according to a second illustrative embodiment of the present invention. Settling aid 200 includes a wrap 210 including arm retaining sleeves 215, 216 located on an inner surface of wrap 210. The inclusion of arm retaining sleeves 215, 216 functions to restrict peripheral arm movement of an infant wrapped in settling aid 200.
Referring now to Figure 10, there is shown a settling aid 300 according to a third illustrative embodiment of the present invention. Settling aid 300 includes a wrap 310 having a leg securing portion 340 located end or foot of wrap 310 with a pair of opposed attachment flaps 342, 343 each having Velcro® engagement portions 345. In this embodiment, the infant will be wrapped initially in wrap 310 with its legs in the folded or flexed position as described earlier and then the leg securing portion 340 folded upwards and further wrapped and secured about the already wrapped infant to maintain the legs of the infant in this flexed position.
Once the baby has settled then leg securing portion 340 can be released to allow the infant to extend their legs as desired.
Leg securing portion 340 may be detachable from wrap 310 such as described earlier and furthermore wrap 310 may also incorporate arm retaining means such as also described previously.
00 In the illustrative embodiments described herein, the settling aids have been made from 100% Scotton with arm retaining means from 90% cotton and 10% elastane, but as would be apparent to those skilled in the art, other materials that are generally used for infant wraps and or swaddles would also be suitable.
A brief consideration of the above described embodiments will indicate that the invention provides an extremely effective settling aid for an infant that operates to restrict the movement of an infant whilst keeping the infant warm and secure thereby facilitating rapid S 10 settling of the infant.
00 Although illustrative embodiments of the present invention have been described in the foregoing detailed description, it will be understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiments disclosed, but is capable of numerous rearrangements, modifications and substitutions without departing from the scope of the invention as set forth and defined by the following claims.
