OWS is an overtaking warning device.
Purpose for designing
"OWS"
Many accidents occur when vehicles are trying to overtake a large vehicle ahead of them.The large vehicle obstructs the vision of the rear vehicle.
The Driver of the large vehicle has no way of warning the overtaking vehicle that there is a dangerous situation up ahead, that they may not be aware of.
If a vehicle overtakes in a dangerous situation the driver of the overtaken may also be involved in the accident in addition to the overtaking vehicle.
This warning device is designed to help minimise the risk of an accident occurring when vehicles are overtaking.
This device gives the driver of the front vehicle the opportunity to warn an overtaking driver of a potentially dangerous situation ahead that they my not be aware of.
NB: The "OWS" device DOES NOT inform drivers wanting to overtake that it is safe to do so.
The decision to make the overtaking manoeuvre is made by the overtaking driver.
"OWS" is designed to give the driver of a vehicle or drivers towing large trailers/caravans etc the opportunity to warn vehicles behind them of potentially dangerous situations, in turn reducing the potential for an accident.
