Description

P001 Section 29 Regulation 3.2(2)
AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT Application Number: Lodged: Invention Title: Vehicle recording system The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us: O VEHICLE RECORDING SYSTEM C The present invention relates to recording apparatus and methods for O recording vehicles while on a dynamometer machine.
Z An objective of the invention is to provide a visual and preferably also an 0 5 audio record of a vehicles performance and functions while on the dynamometer machine. A further preferred objective is to provide the ability to enable real time Sviewing of the process from a remote location.
0 In accordance with one aspect, the present invention comprises a vehicle 0 recording system for recording vehicle performance and functions while operated 0 10 on a dynamometer machine, the system including a plurality of individual and N separate cameras each being, in use, positionable independently to record visually a desired region of the vehicle operating in the dynamometer machine, a video monitor including a display screen, a video recorder device and a video splitting control device receiving, in use, video signals from said cameras and to display same simultaneously on said video monitor and to record same by said video recorder in split screen format where video signals from said individual cameras are displayed simultaneously. Conveniently the video recorder is a DVD type recorder. Preferably four of the cameras are provided whereby the display is split into four separate sections. Conveniently, at least one sound microphone is provided which is operationally connected to the recording system whereby sounds of the vehicle on the dynamometer machine are also recorded.
Preferably the vehicle recording system is connectible to a telecommunications network including but not limited to the worldwide web (internet) whereby real time viewing of the vehicle performance can be viewed from a remote location. If desired a direct feed might be taken from the dynamometer machine tested parameters and fed into the recording system to be recorded thereby.
In accordance with a further aspect of the present invention, a method of recording vehicle performance and function is provided while the vehicle is operated on a dynamometer machine, said method involving positioning a plurality of video recording cameras about the vehicle on the dynamometer machine whereby the cameras will view different regions of the vehicle, delivering the video signal from each said camera to a video splitting device and recording each said video signal simultaneously in split screen format onto a storage medium while simultaneously displaying the video signals on a video monitor.
O A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described Z with reference to the schematic drawing (Fig 1) annexed hereto.
S 5 In the drawing a vehicle 10 is schematically illustrated on a dynamometer machine 11, only part of which is shown. The dynamometer machine may be any conventionally available machine of this general type. The recording system 12 Sincludes individual video cameras 13, 14, 15 and 16 each being separately positionable about the vehicle 10 and each being capable of creating a video 0 10 signal indicative of one area of the vehicle 10 while it is operated on the N dynamometer machine 11. In the illustration camera 13 is aimed at the vehicle engine cavity 17, the camera 14 is aimed at the vehicle instrument panel within the driving cabin 18, the camera 15 is aimed at the vehicle wheels 19 engaged on the dynamometer machine rollers 20 and the camera 16 is positioned to show an overall view of the vehicle Each of the cameras 13 to 16 send video signals to a controller 21 that is capable of splitting the video images to be displayed in quad format on a monitor 22 and to be recorded in this format by a video recorder 23, conveniently a DVD recorder. The system 12 further includes at least one microphone 24 whereby sounds can be displayed and recorded.
The system may also include means to deliver the recorded images via a telecommunications or internet connection to be viewable remotely if desired.
The control device might also enable operator promotional material to be added to the recorded images wherever desired. Finally a housing or cabinet 24 might be provided to house the equipment while it is not in use.

Claims (4)

1. A vehicle recording system for recording vehicle performance and Z functions while operated on a dynamometer machine, the system including a Splurality of individual and separate cameras each being, in use, positionable independently to record visually a desired region of the vehicle operating in the dynamometer machine, a video monitor including a display screen, a video recorder device and a video splitting control device receiving, in use, video signals from said cameras and to display same simultaneously on said video Imonitor and to record same by said video recorder in split screen format where N 10 video signals from said individual cameras are displayed simultaneously.
2. A vehicle recording system wherein the video recording system also includes at least one said recording means to record video and sound simultaneously.
3. A vehicle recording system according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein four cameras are provided.
4. A vehicle recording system according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein means is provided to transmit the recorded signals via telecommunication means to a remote location. IO A method of recording vehicle performance and functions while the vehicle is operated on a dynamometer machine, said method involving positioning a Z plurality of video recording cameras about the vehicle on the dynamometer Smachine whereby the cameras will view different regions of the vehicle, delivering the video signal from each said camera to a video splitting device and recording each said video signal simultaneously in split screen format onto a storage medium while simultaneously displaying the video signals on a video monitor.
