Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT Applicant: Larry Waters Invention Title: A DEVICE FOR SPREADING A SPREADABLE MATERIAL ON A SURFACE The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me: -2-
\O
cI A DEVICE FOR SPREADING A SPREADABLE MATERIAL ON A SURFACE Field of the Invention c 5 The present invention broadly relates to a device for spreading a spreadable material on a surface.
00 O Background of the Invention Devices such as trowels are used to spread a for
\O
example a viscose adhesive or mortar on a surface. A C typical trowel for distributing such a material, such as tile adhesive, has a serrated edge. When the material is spread on the surface by moving the serrated edge over the surface, some of the material penetrates through the serrations and thereby is distributed on the surface in lines along the path of the movement.
For example, small tiles such as mosaic tiles require relatively little adhesive and if locally too much adhesive is applied to the surface, the adhesive often is pushed through groves between adjacent tiles. Prior to grouting, tile adhesive often needs to be removed from the grooves or from top surfaces of the tiles which is a cumbersome procedure. There is a need for an alterative solution.
Summary of the Invention The present invention provides in a first aspect a device for spreading a spreadable material on a surface, the device comprising: a spreading portion for moving at least a portion of the spreadable material over the surface, the spreading portion having an end-portion that in use is spaced from the surface so that the surface and the end-portion form a 3 gap through which in use at least a portion of the spreadable material passes for distribution on the surface and a supporting portion for encouraging a predetermined orientation of the spreading portion relative to the surface.
00 The device typically is arranged so that the gap is substantially constant during the movement if the surface
IND
is substantially flat.
The spreadable material may be a powder, but typically is a viscose matter such as an adhesive or mortar. For example the viscose matter may be tile adhesive or mortar for adhering tiles on the surface. The viscose matter typically is distributed more evenly than it would be distributed by a device that does not have the above defined supporting portion. Consequently the device according the present invention has a significant practical advantage.
In one specific embodiment the spreading portion has an edge-portion that forms the end-portion and in use the gap is defined between the edge-portion and the surface.
For example, the spreading portion may have at least two projections that project from the edge portion and that form a recess with the edge-portion. The projections in use glide on the surface and thereby space the edgeportion from the surface to form the gap. The spreading portion may also comprise a row of the projections and may comprise a serrated edge. In this case at least some of the material would in use pass through the serrations and would be distributed on the surface.
The supporting portion may for example be a portion 4 that in use is positioned in front or behind an imaginary line which comprises portions of the projections from the edge portion and which supports the spreading portion. The supporting portion and the spreading portion typically are connected or are integrally formed. For example, the device may have a substantially U-shaped cross-sectional shape with the supporting portion and the spreading 00 portion forming opposite portions of the device which are connected by a bridge portion that may comprise a handle.
In a variation of this embodiment the device may have a substantially V-shaped cross-sectional shape with the supporting portion and the spreading portion forming opposite portions of the device.
Alternatively, the supporting portion may comprise at least one projection that may extend from the spreading portion, for example from the end-portion or from a sideportion of the spreading portion, in a transversal direction relative to the end-portion and that is arranged to support the spreading portion. In this case the spreading portion typically comprises a handle portion that may be positioned opposite the end-portion.
The device for spreading the spreadable material may be formed from any suitable material, but typically comprises sheet metal or a plastics material.
The present invention comprises in a second aspect a device for spreading a spreadable material on a surface, the device comprising: a first portion for moving at least a portion of the spreadable material over the surface, and a second portion arranged for receiving a portion of the spreadable material, for guiding the received spreadable material through a region of the second IN 5 portion, and for distributing spreadable material on the surface.
The second portion typically has at least one channel arranged for positioning on the surface and for guiding the spreadable material. For example, the second portion may comprise a plurality of substantially parallel
O
Schannels and typically has a portion that has a serrated cross-sectional shape.
A The present invention provides in a third aspect a method of spreading a spreadable material on a surface, the method comprising: moving at least a portion of the spreadable material over the surface using a spreading portion, the spreading portion having an end-portion that in use is spaced from the surface so that a gap is defined between the surface and the end-portion and supporting the spreading portion at a predetermined orientation over the surface during the movement using a supporting portion.
The present invention provided in a fourth aspect a method of spreading a spreadable material on a surface, the method comprising: moving at least a portion of the spreadable material over the surface using a spreading portion, guiding at least a portion of the spreadable material through a region of a distribution portion and distributing the guided spreadable material on the surface.
6 O The step of guiding the spreadable material on the C surface typically comprises guiding the spreadable e( Smaterial in at least one channel.
The invention will be more fully understood from the 5 following description of specific embodiments of the invention. The description is provided with reference to the accompanying drawings.
00 Brief Description of the Drawings
\O
Figure 1 shows a front view, rear view and CI a side view of a device for spreading a spreadable material on a surface according to a first specific embodiment of the present invention, Figure 2 shows a rear view and a side view of a device for spreading a spreadable material on a surface according to a second specific embodiment of the present invention, and Figure 3 shows a front view and a side view of a device for spreading a spreadable material on a surface according to a third specific embodiment of the present invention and Figure 3 shows a variation of this embodiment.
Detailed Description of Specific Embodiments Referring initially to Figure 1, a device and a method for spreading a spreadable material on a surface according to a first specific embodiments of the present invention is now described.
Figure 1 shows the device 10 which comprises in this embodiment a spreading portion 12, a supporting portion 14 and a handle portion 16 positioned on a bridge portion 18.
In this embodiment the spreading portion 12 has a serrated edge 20. The spreading portion 12 is in used 7 moved over a surface and the spreadable material (not shown) is pushed across the surface by the spreading 1portion 12. A portion of the spreading portion, however, penetrates through the serrations of the serrated edge and is distributed on the surface in lines along the pathway of the movement.
The supporting portion 14 is arranged to support the 00 spreading portion 14 in a predetermined angular orientation relative to the surface during the movement.
Consequently the amount of the spreadable material that penetrates through the serrations is substantially constant during the movement which results in the distribution of the spreadable material in lines on the surface having a substantially uniform thickness and height.
The spreadable material may for example be a tile adhesive or a mortar that is distributed over the surface and the substantially uniform lines of the distributed adhesive or mortar facilitate the application of tiles or the like on the surface.
In this embodiment the spreading portion 12, the supporting portion 14 and the bridge portion 18 form a structure that has a substantially U-shaped crosssectional shape and are composed of sheet metal. The handle portion 16 is attached to the bridge portion 18 and formed from wood or any other suitable material. It is to be appreciated, however, that alternatively the spreading portion 12, the supporting portion 14 and the bride portion 18 may also be composed of any other suitable material such as a plastics material. Further, the spreading portion 12 and the supporting portion 14 may not be flat and may not necessarily be oriented parallel to each other. In addition, the device 10 may not comprise a 8 bridge portion and may for example be of a substantially V-shaped cross-sectional shape. Further, any dimensions 1indicated in Figure 1 are only examples for typical dimensions and the device 10 may alternatively have any other suitable dimensions.
Referring now to Figure 2, a device and a method for spreading a spreadable material on a surface according to
O
C an alternative embodiment of the present invention is now described.
Figure 2 shows the device 40 which comprises in this embodiment a spreading portion 42, two supporting portions 44 and a handle portion 46. The supporting portions 44 from side portions of the device 40 and guide the spreading portion 42 in a substantially constant angular orientation over a surface. The spreading portion 42 comprises a serrated edge 48. In a variation of this embodiment the device 40 may comprise only one or more than two supporting portion(s) 44 which may be positioned at any suitable position of the device 40. Further, the supporting portions may have any suitable shape and structure which guides the spreading portion 42 at a predetermined angular orientation over the surface.
In this embodiment the spreading portion 42 and the supporting portions 44 are composed of sheet metal but may alternatively be composed of any other suitable material such as a plastics material. The holder 46 is in this example composed of wood.
In variations the devices shown in Figures 1 and 2 may also comprise supporting portions or guiding portions with wheels which reduce friction when the device is moved over the surface.
Referring now to Figure 3, a device for spreading a spreadable material on a surface according to a further 9 embodiment of the present invention is now described. The I device 60 comprises a first portion 62 for moving the 1spreadable material and a second portion 64 for distributing the spreadable material on the surface. The second portion 64 has a plurality of parallel channels which are in use positioned on the surface and form tubes with the surface. The device 60 comprises a handle portion 00 C 66 for pushing the device 60 on the surface. In use the first portion 62 moves the spreadable material on the surface and a portion of the spreadable material is (1 received by the channels 65 through which it is distributed on the surface and forms lines of substantially even thickness and height.
In this embodiment the second portion 64 has gliding portions 68 which glide on the surface and are located in one plane. In a variation of this embodiment the second portion may be curved so that the channels are curved and the second portion contacts a flat surface within a linear region perpendicular to the direction of movement. Figure 3 shows this variation 70 which comprises a first portion 72 and a second portion 74 with channels 76. A front view of this embodiment is analogous to device shown in Figure The devices 60 and 70 may be composed of any suitable material, but typically are composed of a plastics material.
It is to be appreciated that the devices 60 and only are examples for a large number of possible designs.
Although the invention has been described with reference to particular examples, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the invention may be embodied in many other forms.
