The drainage system 1 includes a plumbing fitting 2a which has a pair of inlets which are interconnected to the washing appliance 28 and the sink 26 respectively. The plumbing fitting 2a further includes a single outlet which is connected to a drainpipe 32. The inlet 16, to cwhich a drainage hose 30 of the washing appliance 28 is connected, is located downstream from an S-type water trap of the plumbing fitting 2a. The a 10 water trap serves as an attenuator for attenuating any noise generated when 0 o wash water drains from the drainage hose 30 into the plumbing fitting 2a via inlet 16.
Referring to Figure 2, the plumbing fitting 2a includes a J-fitting 4 and a Ufitting 6 which can be releasably fastened together to define the S-type water trap. Each fitting 4, 6 is tubular and has a bent pipe body which is integrally molded from plastics material.
The J-fitting 4 includes a pair of ledges 14a, 14b which are each located at a respective end of the bent pipe body. In use, a pair of rubber ring-washers 10Ob are each fitted to a corresponding end of the J-fitting 4 so as to abut against a corresponding ledge 14a, 14b.
The J-fitting 4 further includes a pair of threaded nuts 8a, 8b of like construction as shown in Figure 3. Each nut 8 defines a central aperture 22 through which the J-fitting 4 body extends and further includes a plurality of outer lugs 18 to facilitate gripping of the nut 8 with a hand during tightening.
The base of each nut 8 also includes an inner shelf 20 which abuts a ledge 14 of the J-fitting 4 so as to prevent the nut 8 from being removed from the Jfitting 4. The nut 8 further includes a circular collar which defines an inner thread portion 24.
Returning to Figure 2, the U-fitting 6 includes a bent pipe which has a pair of flared and threaded portions 34a, 34b which are each located at a respective end of the bent pipe. An inlet 16 in the form an upwardly extending tube is
O

Rubber ring washer 10b is located on the corresponding end of J-fitting 4 and is subsequently sandwiched between ledge 14b and outer threaded portion 34a. The nut 8b is then threaded onto outer threaded portion 34a so as to form a water tight seal between J-fitting 4 and U-fitting 6.
In a similar manner, rubber ring washer 10a can be fitted to the inlet portion 7 of the fitting 2a and sandwiched between the ledge 14a and the base of the sink 26 when the nut 8a is engaged with a corresponding thread of the sink 26.
The outlet portion 9 of the fitting 2a is then fastened to the vertical drainpipe 32. The nut 8c and tapered rubber washer 12 are threaded onto the upper end of the drainpipe 32, in that order. The outer threaded portion 32b of Ufitting 6 is then aligned in abutment with the tip of drainpipe 32. Next, the nut 8c is engaged with the threaded portion 34b which causes the tapered washer 12 to be compressed between the drainpipe 32 and the U-fitting 6, thereby forming a water tight seal. During threading of the nut 8c on the threaded portion 34b, the tapered washer 12 is seated on the shelf 20 of the nut 8c.
The drainage hose 30 of the washing appliance 28 can then be next force fitted over the beveled lip of inlet 16.
When installed, the inlet portion 7 of fitting 2a is vertically disposed and
O
oreceives wash water from the sink 26. The outlet portion 16 of fitting 2a is also vertically disposed and drains wash water from the sink (via the water trap) and drainage hose 30 into drain pipe 32. Any drainage noise will be o 5 attenuated by the water trap before reaching the sink 26.
