Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT GKS GREASE-MATE FILTER SYSTEM The following statement is a full description of this innovation, including the best method of performing it known to me: GKS GREASE-MATE FILTER SYSTEM This innovation relates to improvements in structures that separate grease, fats and solids from wastewater.
These structures are normally called grease arrestors or grease traps and they act as a separation and accumulation unit for grease, fats and solids from commercial food preparation premises, thereby ensuring that these fats and solids are prevented from entering and causing blockages in reticulated wastewater conveyancing systems and thereby reducing the load on biological wastewater treatment systems.
These solids are accumulated within the standard double-chambered grease arrestor and are serviced at intervals prescribed by the conveyancing system operators or local authorities. Servicing intervals are dependant upon the amount of soluble fat and oils including settle-able solids entering the grease arrestor structure and its total volume. The GKS Grease-Mate Filter system provides a simple and effective method of improving the final discharge quality.
The basic grease arrestor design has not changed for many years. Previous attempts to provide an alternative method or enhance their performance has proved that filtration of the greasy wastewater is more effective in removing grease and oil from the wastewater. However, the filters were prone to neglect and were simply removed from the housing when they blocked up, rendering the grease trap almost ineffective under normal flows.
The GKS Grease-Mate filter system is an Australian design innovation that provides enhanced separation of greases, fats and solids, is permanently fixed to the grease arrestor, is less likely to suffer damage and is not easily removed.
The GKS Grease-Mate filter system provides an additional chamber to the traditional grease arrestor and provides a buffering effect, which improves the retention time and aids the solids separation within the first two chambers.
The filter on the GKS Grease-Mate system is set at the optimal clean water height and provides a unique flow characteristic that further treats the wastewater as it flows over the filter into the third chamber, where the further separated wastewater is stored before being discharged into the wastewater conveyancing system.
The GKS Grease-Mate filter system can be retro fitted to existing standard grease arrestors or installed as part of a new installation. The grease baffle, solids baffle and filter are sized according to the specific grease arrestor dimensions and expected flow rates through the grease arrestor. (Refer to drawings attached) The grease and solids baffles may be constructed of stainless steel, concrete, PVC, HDPE, polypropylene or similar materials and the filter constructed of stainless steel, PVC, HDPE, Polypropylene or similar materials, but consideration must be given to the strength and durability of the materials versus the environment in the grease arrestors and the fixing of the filter to the baffles and grease arrestor.
The GKS Grease-Mate is serviced at the same time that the grease arrestor is serviced by simply being hosed down in-situ and the wastewater being carted away for treatment and disposal by the clients waste disposal contractor.
As the GKS Grease-Mate is installed upstream of the grease arrestor's outlet, it retains the grease and solids a distance away from the outlet, making it more efficient at removing and retaining oils, solids and grease from greasy wastewater. Should the grease arrestor fill with solids and grease quicker than anticipated and flow over the grease baffle, there is additional retention in the last chamber before it starts entering the wastewater conveyancing system.
Therefore, it goes without saying that the grease arrestor servicing will need to be done less frequently, resulting in a significant cost saving to the waste water generator and will have less of an impact on the environment.
Claims (4)
1. The GKS Grease-Mate filter system provides an additional chamber to the traditional two-chambered grease arrestor.
2. The baffles separating the second and third chambers incorporate a uniquely designed filter system to further treat wastewater before it is discharged into the wastewater conveyancing system.
3. The filter and baffle system are permanently fixed in position, rendering them less likely to suffer damage whether intentional or not and is not easily removed.
4. The filter design provides a unique flow characteristic that further treats greasy wastewater before being discharged out of the grease arrestor into the wastewater conveyancing system. The filter does not require removal from the grease arrestor for servicing and is simply hosed down in situ when the client's wastewater contractor cleans out the grease arrestor. Applicants:- G.
