Description

AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 INNOVATION PATENT SPECIFICATION Invention Title: Applicants: Retractable Bollard Donald Geoffrey Brown The invention is described in the following statement: RETRACTABLE BOLLARD 0 SThis innovation relates to a retractable bollard of the type that can be used to block a car parking space from unauthorised use.
Bollards of various types are known. These can be locked in an 00 upright position to block unauthorised use of a car parking space.
These may be unlocked and adjusted to allow authorised access to the car parking space, either by removing all together or by rotating the bollard so that it does not interfere with the vehicle.
A disadvantage with these types of device is that it is necessary for the driver or passenger to leave the vehicle to adjust the bollard and in some instances this can mean temporarily leaving the vehicle in a dangerous position where it may be damaged or block access to other vehicles.
An object of the present innovation is to avoid this disadvantage. The present innovation provides a bollard for use in blocking a vehicle parking space from unauthorised use, including a frame which may be fixed within or at the entrance to the car parking space, a rotatable elongated member rotatably mounted within said frame, a bollard means mounted on said elongated member, such that on rotation of the elongated member said bollard moves between a vehicle access position within said frame and a vehicle blocking position, extending from said frame, and a remote controlled actuating means connected to said frame to rotate the elongated member, the arrangement being such that by use of a remote control the actuating means rotates the elongated member to move the bollard means between its vehicle blocking position and its vehicle access position.
The vehicle blocking position may be but is not necessarily vertical.
The vehicle access position may be but is not necessarily horizontal.
The bollard may be of any suitable shape and configuration. In one preference the bollard is substantially U-shaped, the legs being connected to the rotatable elongated member.
00 The rotatable elongated member is preferably mounted to the bollard frame at each end in a rotatable manner.
810 An actuating lever may be provided at one end of the rotatable elongated member. The actuator is preferably a piston actuator mounted within the frame and with its piston extending to the lever so that when the piston is extended the rotatable member is rotated and the bollard moves between its vehicle blocking position and its vehicle access position.
Any suitable power source can be used but preferably is a low voltage system. A battery pack may be located within the frame or there may be a connection to the mains electricity via a transformer, for example.
As indicated, the actuator is operated by a remote control device such that it can be operated from within a vehicle approaching the car parking space, as will be appreciated in the art. It means that each person authorised to have access to the car parking space can be provided with a remote control device to operate the retractable bollard.
The invention will now be further described with reference to the embodiment shown in the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a section plan view of a retractable bollard in accordance with the innovation.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the bollard shown in Figure 1.
O Figure 3 is an end elevation showing the bollard in its vehicle blocking position.
a Figure 4 is a side elevation of the bollard shown in Figure 3.
t' Figure 5 is a side elevation showing the bollard in its retracted vehicle access position.
00oo N In the drawings, there is shown a U-shaped bollard 6 connected to a rotatable elongated member 7 which is mounted at supports 8 and 9 to the frame 11. There is provided a lever 12 connected to the piston 13 of actuator 14. The actuator 14 is mounted to the frame as shown at Thus the bollard 6 may be activated by use of the actuator 14 to move between its positions as shown in Figures 3 and 4 and position shown in Figure 5. A battery pack may be employed as shown at 16.
Many variations may be made to the above described arrangement and construction of parts without departing from the ambit of the present innovation as outlined in the claims annexed hereto.

Claims (3)

  1. 2. A bollard, as claimed in claim 1, wherein said bollard means includes a substantially U-shaped member, the legs of which are connected to said elongated member.
  2. 3. A bollard, as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said elongated member is provided with an actuating lever and the actuating means includes a piston hingably fixed to said lever.
  3. 4. A bollard, as claimed in any preceding claim, including a battery pack or other power source locating within said frame. 6 o 5. A bollard substantially as hereinbefore described with c reference to the drawings. 0 DATED: 3 December 2004 0 5 PHILLIPS ORMONDE FITZPATRICK Attorneys for: oo Cl Donald Geoffrey Brown 010
