Description

AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 Following Provisional Application Number: 2003 906825 Dated: December 15 th 2003 COMPLETE
SPECIFICATION
Innovation Patent" Balcony Edge Detail (Provisional as TILE GUARD PROFILE) The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of its performance known to me: Prepared for Mr. Herbert Klempert by ID C Terrigal NSW 2260 Submitted by the Inventor: Herbert Klempert of Unit 1 3 Carnarvon Road, West Gosford NSW 2250
I
"Balcony Edge Detail" Inventor: Herbert Klempert "Balcony Edge Detail" Described as "Tile Guard Profile" in the Provisional Patent Application nbr. 2003-906825.
To bring about acceptance of new ideas, that will change old habits and procedures, these changes will have to be recognized by industry to bring full recognition and eventual acceptance by that industry's associates.
Changes usually challenge many long accepted operations and practices and by doing so also increase pressures brought about by advanced materials and swift industry changes.
The housing (home) and construction industry is not isolated from transformations but must evaluate the worth of such changes with an eye to customer demands, quality and accustomed building time-frames as well as implementing safety standards by observing related rules.
It is a well known fact that new techniques and materials usually go hand in hand with the speeding up of construction work and by doing so assist 'customer positive' economic outcomes.
This evolution in construction processes does require variations by discarding erstwhile methods in favor of the new, more advanced routines and by doing so bringing these new methods and material into realistic practice without increasing costs out of hand.
The innovation described in the following pages relates to this area.
"Balcony Edge Detail" is an idea that makes it far easier to install and complete to be tiled, or otherwise surfaced, areas such as balconies, terraces, outdoor areas.
"Balcony Edge Detail" Inventor: Herbert Klempert The design also permits water, that may not drain off the surface effectively and seep through the surface section, to drain through to the lowest point and then be ensnared at the very outer edge of the "Balcony Edge Detail" and then drained off through the elongated water elimination holes (Page "B" Fig. 1) The design aims to protect the outer extremities of the construction at the very io edge of the "Balcony Edge Detail" as it rises to the exact same level as the area to be protected, (tiled or otherwise).
The "Balcony Edge Detail" system is designed to be installed at the outer edges of a i.e. fully cured concrete balcony or verandah. When accurately cut and positioned it can be secured with any type of fastener such as dyna-bolts or concrete nails, even glued. After initial positioning and installation the resulting frame becomes the holding form for tiling or other finishing.
Because not all tiles are of the same dimensions nor thickness; and the methods of "putting the tiles down" vary from gluing to cementing, the ultimate height, from base to top-edge, of the "Balcony Edge Detail" can be varied as required by utelizing the innovations unique full length "snap and tear" section of the upright section of the outer main frame of the "Balcony Edge Detail" system.
After installation of the profile and before preparation for tiling (or finishing) a polymer rod is positioned inside the edge along the full length of the 'Balcony Edge Detail' Page Fig. 7) to keep the elongated drain holes free of tiling slurries and/or glue and to assure unhindered draining of collected water.
The "Balcony Edge Detail" is a precision extruded, profiled length of material that has been designed to protect and enhance edges and borders of balconies, terraces, decks and other similar constructions when tiling or paving of these entities is required and, at the same time drain any surface 3 "Balcony Edge Detail" Inventor: Herbert Klempert water and remnants away from the wall sections of the house or construction (Page Fig.2) When the "Balcony Edge Detail" is accurately positioned and secured on protruding edges of, i.e. concrete, it will protect these edges from abrasion and breakages. Provided that the installation has been completed with the correct "fall" to the edge of the surface it has excellent surface and io storm water run-off along its full length. Specially positioned elongated water shed slots or holes will collect water that may seep between tiles and run to the very base of the construction platform.
When collected, sub-surface moisture flows to the edge of "Balcony Edge Detail" then down the "Balcony Edge Detail" sloping profile (Page Fig 2) outward and away from walls etc. through the water shed slots by means of its specially slanted shape. The profile and dimensions of the extrusion can be changed to meet other requirements to suit particular situations.
The later installation of upright posts and railings, on top of the finished floor area, has also been considered in this innovation. The edge of the "Balcony Edge Detail" that is installed onto the base surface Manufacture.
"Balcony Edge Detail" is manufactured to any suitable length to suit exact applications. If dimensions are advised by the builder the length can be made precisely to these measurements. Most economically made from extruded aluminum it can, nevertheless be manufactured from any material suitable for extrusion such as carbon based polymers, high density plastics, stainless steel, etc.
If supplied in factory length, it can be cut to any measurement lengthwise.
The profile and other dimensions such as the shape and configuration of its profile may be changed to suit particular requirements and applications.
"Balcony Edge Detail" Inventor: Herbert Klempert The differences.
The "Balcony Edge Detail" difference. The unique feature of the design is its special profile that protects edges that are sometimes subject to traffic wear and tear and also permits storm and/or cleaning water to run off in a "controlled manner" and clear away from walls and masonry.
"Balcony Edge Detail" has fastening points that extend well into the io area to be surfaced and it is therefore almost impossible to misalign or wrongly installed.
The extrusion profile features specially prepared grooves that permit connecting sleeves at the corners (Page Fig. 3) to slide easily into place anywhere along the length of the profile. This also applies when lengths have to be connected over longer than the supplied factory lengths.
"Balcony Edge Detail" inter-connecting sleeve assures that each length of "Balcony Edge Detail" is perfectly aligned and secure.
The connecting sleeve (Page Fig. 1,2,3) is a short but sufficiently long section of extruded material that let full sized sections of the "Balcony Edge Detail" length to be, almost invisibly, but securely joined. It slides within the outside of the full length "Balcony Edge Detail" profile.
When placed and secured, the connecting sleeve can be fully secured by any array of means into a rigid unit with the lengths of "Balcony Edge Detail" "Balcony Edge Detail" provides a secure edge facing on any solid surface. It is, principally, a tile and/or pavers retainer with moisture collection, shedding ability.
The protuberance and a specially shaped "water barb" Page Fig. 3) on the underside assures easy and controlled water shed from any surface and "Balcony Edge Detail" Inventor: Herbert Klempert well away from any wall over which the balcony (or similar) has been constructed.
"Balcony Edge Detail" particular 'under shape' permits water that may seep through the tiling, or other surface, to collect and flow from underneath the "Balcony Edge Detail" through the drain holes positioned in the "Balcony Edge Detail" and always drip well away from wall surfaces.
The design also features sufficient expanse between the immediate water shedding lower section of the "Balcony Edge Detail" and a wall section, to permit tiling or rendering between a wall section and the "Balcony Edge Detail" When employed, this part of the wall will also be protected by the "Balcony Edge Detail" Appearance and function.
In its basic form it is a length of extruded material painted, powder coated or raw to specific colors configured into specifically suitable shapes to allow edge protection and unrivalled water collection and moisture shedding by utelizing its distinctive, special profiled shape. By design, the connection sleeve will align all merged sections and enhance the look of the finished project.
By improving water runoff the working of the actual surface area is substantially increased. This is as a direct effect of the efficient water shedding through the "Balcony Edge Detail" unique moisture collection concept. The "Balcony Edge Detail" protruding, visible lower edge is shaped into a descending and outward configuration which will let water drop downward and away from facades as a building instead of running down walls and/or other surfaces.
The "Balcony Edge Detail" is prepared and assembled from relatively inexpensive, pre-manufactured stock materials. The utilization of traditional "Balcony Edge Detail" I Inventor: Herbert Klempert components in conjunction with the "Balcony Edge Detail" achieves a unique and clean appearance.
The "Balcony Edge Detail" also makes tiling or paving process faster because the container edges become a positive encasement for the tiles or pavers yet does this at a surprisingly low cost and at considerably reduced installation costs.
The "Balcony Edge Detail" can be manufactured for, and used on, any type of structure that requires reliable edging.
