Abstract

A quantitative measured value of the speed of the web is detected with the aid of a sensor (16) in order to detect web breakage (02) in a web processing machine (03, 04). Said measured value is then compared with a set value in an evaluation device (14). The set value is derived from other measured values or can be supplied by means of an input. The evaluation device (14) determines the occurrence of web breakage when the measured value differs from the set value by more than a given fraction.
