Description
Improved viewing screen, eg.windscreen, helmet visor, sunglasses etc. that selectively cuts out glare.
Normally glare reduction is accomplished through passive means through tinting or polarising of the view screen. Alternative active glare reduction solutions include 'transition' materials that darken over time when exposed to UV light, or'full on full off LCD solutions where light and glare blockout are accomplished rapidly over the entire viewing area.
This invention makes possible selective glare reduction. The screen has an embedded active surface with controllable light transmissibility (eg. flexible LCD film). The screen also has an array of photodetectors either applied over the active surface or along the circumference of the viewing screen. This combination of the controllable active surface (eg. LCD film) and photodetectors allows for the intensity of the light to be measured at the point of entry and actively blocked at the point of entry. In practice, if for example, this technology were applied to a car windscreen, in night driving situations with incoming traffic, the headlights of the incoming traffic would be actively dimmed by the windscreen only at the apparent position of entry of light from the driver's perspective. The driver would not be dazzled by the light and will also not be handicapped by the darkening of the entire windscreen as the darkening of the windscreen will only occur at the apparent point of entry of the light from the oncoming traffic and nowhere else.
A computer processor with appropriate software will analyse the intensity of the incoming light and the position of the driver and selectively vary the transmissibility of the windscreen at the point of entry of the incoming light from the driver's perspective. The level of dimming will vary depending on a situation, background light levels or driver preference (within safety limits)
Claims (5)
1. A viewing screen such as a car windscreen, helmet visor or sunglasses made of any transparent material as a single sheet or laminated, curved or flat
2. A viewing screen as claimed in claim 1 wherein the viewing screen has a material of an actively controllable light transmissibility, such as a grey-scale high-resolution flexible polymer liquid crystal display (LCD) film whose light transmissibility can be controlled at any point of its surface.
3. A viewing screen as claimed in claims land 2 wherein the material of an actively controllable light transmissibility is applied over the entire surface or large proportion of the surface of the viewing screen
4. A viewing screen according to any claims in 1-3 that has a photodetector array applied as a transparent film over the entire surface of the viewing screen or as a series of photodetectors around the cirucumference of the viewing screen A viewing screen according to any claims in 1-4 that is controlled by a microprocessor and appropriate software that analyses the light hitting the viewing screen and controls the material of controllable light transmissibility to actively and selectively darken the section of the viewing screen as determined by the software
6. A viewing screen substantially herein before described with reference to figures 1-4 of the accompanying drawings VICTOR MAJOR March 2003-03-23
