Description
1 A WATER TRAP CONNECTION TECHNICAL
FIELD
The present invention relates to water trap connections and has particular relevance to making connections where there is limited space and access.
BACKGROUND
ART
Where practicable, local body regulations often stipulate that water traps be installed between large water vessels, e.g. baths and sinks and waste outlets.
The most common forms of water traps are S bends and P traps.
The installation of typical S bends and P traps requires a substantial amount of free space, typically at least 200mm.
In some situations, particularly beneath baths, a large space is not available and thus the provision of an S bend or P trap directly beneath a bath outlet has not been possible.
In the absence of a trap, odours caused by an accumulation of body fats in downstream piping is a common occurrence. The odour problem is exacerbated where baths or sinks are not used on a regular basis.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a water trap connection for confined space situations.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the ensuing description which is given by way of example.
DISCLOSURE OF INVENTION According to the present invention, there is provided a water trap connection to a bath or sink comprising: a trap housing having an internally threaded inlet and a substantially horizontally extending outlet with a U-shaped water passage between the inlet and outlet, an elongate connector for connecting the outlet of the trap to a waste pipe, and a waste grate having an external thread for connecting an outlet from the bath or sink to the internally threaded inlet of the trap.
The elongate connector can be a rigid pipe.
The elongate connector can be a flexible pipe.
A free end of the elongate connector can be fitted with a rigid pipe elbow.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Aspects of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a diagrammatic sectional drawing of a water trap connection to a bath according to the present invention.
With respect to the drawing, the present invention provides a water trap connection particularly suitable for bath installations where there is limited space, the connection comprising a substantially U-shaped trap generally indicated by arrow 1, the trap having an internally threaded inlet 2 and substantially horizontally extending outlet 3.
An elongate connector generally indicated by arrow 4 connects the outlet 3 to the waste pipe 5 (which in the example illustrated is a penetration in a slab) to a waste grate generally indicated by arrow 7.
The waste grate has an external thread 8 connecting an outlet 9 from a bath 10 to the threaded inlet 2 of the trap 1.
The elongate connectors 4 can be in the form of a PVC pipe as illustrated or a flexible hose (not shown).
The free end of the connector 4 can be connected to a rigid pipe elbow 11.
The connectors between one outlet 3, the connector 4 and the elbow 11 and waste pipe 5 may be made using approved sealants and seals and the like and may include adaptor sleeves and the like to enable the installer to match commercially available fittings.
The water trap 1 can be moulded from plastics and include an upper body portion 12 which accommodates the inlet 2 and outlet 3 and a lower part 13 which forms the base of the trap can be joined to the upper body portion 12 by a common flange 14.
A rubber seal 15 which engages with the flange 16 of the inlet 2 provides for a water right joint between the outlet 9, the grate 7 and the inlet 2 of the trap.
The water trap 1 is provided with weir wall 18 adjacent the outlet 3. The weir wall is designed to provide entrapped water to level of approximately 72mm in depth.
The trap can be moulded in PVC and the grate formed in a metal such as stainless steel or brass.
The overall height of the trap can be in the order of 100mm making it very suitable for limited access installations.
To minimise syphoning affects the water passage throughout the trap is of a circular cross-section.
The waste trap connection which can be pre-assembled has a number of advantages including: the trap can be quickly and efficiently installed in confined spaces, the trap provides flexibility in terms if aligning a waste outlet with a waste pipe, The assembly of the trap to a vessel such as a bath or basin or sink can be achieved from above as opposed to below the vessel where there may be limited access.
Aspects of the present invention have been described by way of example only and it would be appreciated that modifications and additions thereto can be made without departure from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Claims (4)
1. A water trap connection to a bath or sink comprising: a trap housing having an internally threaded inlet and a substantially horizontally extending outlet with a U-shaped water passage between the inlet and outlet, an elongate connector for connecting the outlet of the trap to waste pipe, and a waste grate having an external thread for connecting an outlet from the bath or sink to the internally threaded inlet of the trap.
2. A water trap connection as claimed in claim 1 wherein the elongate connector includes a rigid pipe.
3. A waste trap connection as claimed in claim 1 wherein the elongate connector includes a flexible pipe.
4. A waste trap connection as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein a free end of the elongate connector is fitted with a rigid pipe elbow. A waste trap connection substantially as hereindescribed with reference to the accompanying drawings. DATED this 2 9 th day of October 2003 John Brem By his Patent Attorneys Cullen Co.
