Description
PATENTS ACT 1990 (AS AMENDED) COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR OFFICE USE Short Title: Int. Cl: Application Number: Lodged: Complete Specification-Lodged: Accepted: Lapsed: Published: Priority Related At: Name of Applicant: Address of Applicant: TO BE COMPLETED BY APPLICANT Mr. Phillip Blackman Villa 6/133 Queen Victoria Street BEXLEY NSW 2207 Actual Inventor: AS ABOVE Address for Service: ANDERSON-TAYLOR ASSOCIATES, Registered Patent Attorneys of 10 Harrison Avenue BONNET BAY N.S.W. 2226 Complete Specification for the invention entitled: A SECURITY LOCKING CASE The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me: This invention relates to security apparatus. More paricularly although not exclusively it discloses an improved locking aid for roller doors.
Existing locks for roller doors typically comprise a key operated tumbler located in the centre of the door rail with transverse locking bars out to each side. Rotation of the tumbler between the unlocked and locking positions causes these bars to extend out from a retracted position to seat in cutouts in the side track or wall. Alternatively such doorsmay be locked by a hasp and padlock arrangement engaging between the door and a side wall or floor anchorage. In the former case with the tumbler located at the centre the structure is weakened at this point so that even a moderate inward pressure against a locked roller door can cause -it to buckle or deform sufficiently to pull the bars out of position. In the latter case the security of the door is subject to the usual weakness of padlocks in the which the bolt can be twisted or sawn off with relative ease.
It is therefore an object of this invention to ameliorate the aforementioned disadvantages and accordingly a security case is disclosed for a detachable lock of the type used to secure a door or other movable barrier, said case being formed with a recess extending in from one end for receiving the housing of said detachable lock, the recess terminating at an inner wall which has a fixed lug directed back into said recess and an aperture extending through said wall to a second opposite end of the case, the lug and aperture being spaced apart and positioned to interfit respectively with a locking niche and a protruding fixed bolt of said lock and the case further including a slot which extends into the case from one side to intersect said aperture whereby in use the security case can be fitted to the door or barrier in a manner whereby said recess encloses at least part of the lock housing and bolt to prevent tampering therewith and the lug engages in said locking niche.
C
The currently preferred form of this invention will now be described with reference to the attached schematic drawings in which: figures 1 to 3 show perspective, and side views of one form of security case according to this concept, figure 4 shows an example of a detachable lock for use with the security case of figures 1 to 3, figure 5 shows the lock fitted into the security case, figure 6 shows a portion of a conventional roller door and side track, and figure 7 shows the roller door of figure 6 fitted with the security case and lock of figures 1 to Referring first to figures 1 to 3 the case may have the external shape of a rectangular parallelepiped with a recess 1 extending in from one end 2. The recess terminates at an interior wall 3 in which are located an aperture 4 and an outwardly protruding fixed lug 5. These items are spaced apart and positioned to fit a detachable lock as described later. Adjacent to the other end 6 of the case opposite to the recess 1 a slot 7 is also formed which extends in from one side. The slot with this particular embodiment preferably extends in for about 40% of the external width of the case, is located about 4 mm in from the end 6 and is parallel to said end to form a-tongue 8. As shown this slot also intersects the aperture 4 so that the axis of said aperture extends through it at right angles.
The preferred type of lock 9 for use with the security case comprises a solid metal housing 10 with a straight fixed ,cylindrical bolt 12 extending out from ome end. To the side of this bolt and spaced therefrom a niche 13 is located with a tumbler operated locking pawl inside (not shown) to retain a suitably shaped lug. The lock as best shown in figure 5 can thus be inserted into the recess 1 of the case so that the fixed bolt extends out through the aperture 4 and the lug is retained within the niche 13. The lock once inserted into .the case in this way cannot be removed without the use of a key or other means to operate the tumbler mechanism.
The invention is particularly although not exclusively useful in relation to securing roller doors. Part of a typical roller door installation is shown schematically in figure 6.
There is a vertical side track 14 in which the door 15 slides -4up and down. In this example it is shown in its lowered or closed position with the bottom rail 16 of the door abutting the ground or floor 17. A series of aligned holes 18, 19 and are cut through the inner and outer flanges of the side track and the door rail 16. The security case as shown in figure 7 is then placed so that the tongue 8 extends sideways into the clearance gap between the rail 16 and the outer track tongue 21. Preferably the positions of the holes 18, 19 and 20 and the depth of the slot 7 are chosen so that with the flange 8 fully inserted these holes align with the aperture 4 in the case. The lock 9 is then inserted into the recess 1 as described earlier so that the bolt 12 extends through the aperture 4 and the aligned holes 18, 19 and 20 to secure the door against both vertical movement in the track and sideways displacement out of it. The Pug 5 inside the case also engages the locking pawl within the niche 13 of the lock to prevent removal without operation of the tumbler 22.
The security case thus greatly enhances the effectiveness of the lock by preventing any access to the bolt so that it cannot be cut or bent. The tumbler housing of the lock itself is also protected against any kind of twisting or cutting action which are the typical methods of breaking detachable locks.
It will thus be appreciated that this invention at least in the form of the embodiment described provides a novel and useful security device. Clearly however the example disclosed is only the currently preferred form of this invention as the shape and configuration of the case may be modified to suit other types of locks or security installations. Also, while it is currently preferred to form the case from gun-metal the invention extends to the use of any other type of high strength material.
Claims (7)
1. A security case for a detachable lock of the type used to secure a door or other movable barrier, said case being formed with a recess extending in from one end for receiving the housing of said detachable lock, the recess terminating at an inner wall which has a fixed lug directed back into said recess and an aperture extending through said wall to a second opposite end of the case, the lug and aperture being spaced apart and positioned to interfit respectively with a locking niche and a protruding fixed bolt of said lock and the case further including a slot which extends into the case from one side to intersect the aperture whereby in use the security case can be fitted to said door or barrier in a manner whereby the recess encloses at least- part of the lock housing and bolt to prevent tampering therewith and the lug engages in said locking niche.
2. The security case as claimed in claim 1 wherein the slot is substantially parallel to said second opposite end of the case.
3. The security case as claimed in claim 2 wherein said recess is rectangular in cross-section with the width exceeding the height thereof.
4.The security case as claimed in claim 3 wherein a tongue is defined between the slot and said second opposite end of the -7- case.
The security case as claimed in claim 4 wherein the slot extends in from said one side for about 40% of the width of the case.
6. A security case substantially as described herein with reference to the drawings.
7. A method of securing a roller door installation of the type having a vertical side track with inner and outer flanges between which the door slides and a series of holes through both said vertical side track and a portion of said door which align when the door is closed, said method including the steps of:- positioning the security case as claimed in claim 1 so that with the door closed the outer track flange enters into the slot and the aperture is in alignment with said series of holes, inserting into the case a security lock of the type having a locking niche and a protruding fixed bolt to interfit respectively with said lug and the aligned aperture and holes whereby said door is secured against opening.
