Abstract
The invention is concerned with a novel process for the manufacture of alpha -tocopherol this process comprises reacting trimethylhydroquinone with a phytyl derivative of the formula

wherein X is a leaving group, in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid or trifluoroacetic anhydride.
<??>The invention is further concerned with the novel compound of formula

which is an intermediate in the above process.
