A barrel-filling (cask-filling) apparatus with a balance, which monitors the filling weight, and with a suction-extraction device which is arranged, in the filling position, in the region of the plug hole and engages around the filling tube with its suction opening, is characterised in that the suction-extraction device, in the filling position of the apparatus, is arranged such that the border of the suction opening is located at a slight vertical distance above the surface of the barrel, in that the suction-extraction device is retained by a lifting device which is controlled by a sensor which determines the vertical distance of the suction-extraction device above the surface of the barrel, and in that the lifting device is designed to be controlled such that, during lowering onto the barrel, it first of all moves downwards until the suction-extraction device and/or the filling tube are/is in contact with the barrel and then moves upwards until the sensor indicates the correct height position.
