Abstract

To apply size to a yarn (17), and set the size coating, the yarn is treated with water and then the size is applied to the yarn from a bath (4) while some of the water carried by the yarn is dispersed into the size bath. The size concentration in the bath is at a given concentration balance. Size is transferred from a size supply bath (5) to the applicator bath during sizing, to maintain a constant concentration. To size yarns, the volume of size to be transferred from the supply bath to the applicator bath is determined by a monitor (7), calculated as the actual size coating value, which is set by the pressure on a roller assembly (9) where the actual and nominal size coating values are compared and controlled. In the initial stage, the yarn is passed through a roller assembly (8) to give it the required water content.
