Abstract

In the gas nitriding of metal workpieces at 1000-1200 degrees C, the nitrogen partial pressure of the gas atmosphere during nitriding is adjusted in two stages of predetermined duration. In the first stage, the partial pressure is above the theoretical equilibrium pressure required to achieve the target case nitrogen content. In the second stage (diffusion phase), the partial pressure is equal to the theoretical equilibrium pressure. Preferably, the first and second stages have durations chosen according to the desired case nitrogen content and are especially of equal duration.
