Abstract
The position location system uses position data for the vehicle provided by a satellite navigation system, combined with information obtained from a digitalised street map, to determine the street position of the vehicle. The attenuation of the transmitted satellite signals limits the vehicle positioning accuracy, improved by comparing data detected onboard the vehicle with reference patterns for identifying the type of road along which the vehicle is travelling, the corresponding road of this type selected from the street map via the position data.
