Abstract
A process for gas nitriding or carbonitriding of an alloy steel workpiece (especially of corrosion resistant steel containing more than 13% Cr), in an ammonia-containing atmosphere, the workpiece is subjected to pre-carburising by supplying a dissociable carbon source, especially an alcohol, into the heated furnace prior to nitriding or carbonitriding.
