Abstract

Aqueous polymer dispersions containing vinyl ester polymers or vinyl ester copolymers and having reduced contents of undesired residual monomeric vinyl esters and possibly acetaldehyde as a consequence of the preparation are prepared from corresponding starting dispersions, as obtainable by conventional polymerisation or copolymerisation methods from ethylenically unsaturated monomers, by selective alkaline hydrolysis (saponification) of the alkaline-hydrolysable residual monomeric vinyl esters in the dispersions and preferably simultaneous removal of the acetaldehyde and unhydrolysed residual monomeric vinyl esters from the aqueous dispersions by distillation. The residual-monomer-free polymer dispersions are used as binders in low-emission or emission-free aqueous preparations, for example for paints, coatings, plasters, adhesives, paper sizes (sizing agents), fibre non-woven binders, textile auxiliaries, etc, in particular for interior applications or in closed spaces.
