Abstract
In this method it is provided to write the recording of a fault pattern and a healthy pattern one above the other via a digital memory and to use pulses which have the same amplitude and curve shape. For this purpose, an arc is generated at the fault location and when the capacitor is discharged through the arc current to a voltage below the ignition voltage of the fault location, the existing residual charge of the capacitor is fed to the cable in the manner of a pulse and the reflected wave is detected via a channel of the digital memory. Subsequently, after disconnecting the cable and recharging the capacitor to a voltage below the ignition voltage of the fault location, a new discharge will occur via the cable, the reflected wave produced being recorded via a second channel of the digital memory. When the two recordings are written one above the other, the point of deviation is used for determining the fault location. <IMAGE>
