Switching mechanism for typewriters.
The invention relates to a switching mechanism for typewriters in which the switching from type to type takes place during the back and forth movement of the type lever, and in which a split control wheel is provided for this purpose, which is connected to a common switch blade.
The invention consists in the fact that the abutting front edges of the teeth of the ratchet wheel halves are bevelled in opposite directions, and that the switch blade effecting the switching process has a correspondingly beveled tip so that the switch from one ratchet wheel to the other takes place by sliding the knife on the teeth . This device was made in order to prevent the knife from hitting the teeth of the ratchet gears when changing gears and thus to achieve almost noiseless switching.
In the drawing, an embodiment of the invention is represented by eight different figures. Fig. 1 shows a side view of the switching mechanism in partial section. Fig. 2 shows a front view of the switching mechanism in partial section. 3-8 show, on an enlarged scale, the positions which the blades and teeth of the ratchet wheels assume with respect to one another, during a forward and a backward movement of the type lever.
From the carrier a, the shaft c is held by points b. On this sits a gear d which engages in a rack e. A toothed wheel 1, which sits on a spring box g, engages in the rack e. On the shaft c, the ratchet half k is rotatably arranged. Also is on the shaft

In FIGS. 3-8, sections of the ratchet wheel halves i and h are shown on an enlarged scale.
The position according to Fig. 3 is taken by the ratchet wheel halves h and i during the rest position of the type

the ratchet wheel half i is rotated by the spring m inserted between the ratchet wheel halves in the direction of the arrow against the ratchet wheel half h so that the tooth x moves from the dot-dashed position to the full-line position. Afterwards, during the backward movement of the type lever from the roller to the rest position, the knife n can slide over from tooth y of ratchet half h to tooth Xl of ratchet half i (FIG. 6).
Approximately on the first half of the path of the backward movement of the type lever, the knife n assumes the position shown in FIG. During the backward movement of the type lever on the second half of the way, the knife n slides from the tooth y of the ratchet half h to the tooth x1 of the ratchet half i (Fig. 8).
With the spring m inserted between the ratchet wheel halves, after the knife n has slid off the tooth y, the shift wheel half h is rotated in the direction of the arrow so that the tooth y moves from the position shown in dash-dotted lines to the position shown in full lines.
