Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc / Clms Page number 1>
Process for making cellulose, cellulose-containing raw materials and products, cellulose derivatives and other carbohydrates of the cellulose group difficult to wet or waterproof.
EMI1.1
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
For example, to make paper glue-proof or waterproof, it is sufficient to run the same at such a speed over a porous clay plate immersed in thionyl chloride or chlorosulfur with the lower side that it remains exposed to the vapors for about 2-10 seconds. The clay plate is conveniently located in a flat box provided with slots on the opposite sides for inserting and removing the paper. Instead of a fixed clay plate, the paper to be treated can be guided over rotatable, porous rollers immersed in thionyl chloride or chlorosulfur or sprayed with these agents, even with the same treatment time.
The new process has the advantage, among other things, that it produces the desired effect very quickly, the cellulose becoming difficult to wet or waterproof, etc. even at low temperatures.
If lower temperatures are used, there is still the risk of damage to the strength of the cellulose not to the extent that it is otherwise present when the substances to be treated are treated at higher temperatures (at or below the boiling point of thionyl chloride or sulfur chloride) accidentally remain exposed to the acidic gases produced during exposure for a long time. The new method considerably simplifies the technical design of the previously proposed method identified in the introduction.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. A method for making cellulose, cellulose-containing raw materials and products, cellulose derivatives and other carbohydrates of the cellulose group, as well as with such impregnated substances by means of thionyl chloride or sulfur chloride vapors, characterized in that the substances to be treated exposed to the action of finely divided liquid Exposing thionyl chloride or chlorosulfur, optionally with the addition of heat.
