Elektrostatisches Relais.

Electrostatic relay.
The common relays, in which an iron armature is attracted by an electromagnet, need a certain time to respond. The delay arises both from the self-induction of the electromagnet and from the mass of the iron armature, which has to be accelerated. Since the magnetic force, which is allotted to the unit of the cross-sectional area of the magnet, cannot be increased as desired, it is not possible to reduce the time it takes for the relay to respond below a certain minimum. If, instead of the magnetic force, the electrostatic attraction of two capacitor plates is used, the delay caused by the self-induction does not apply, but it has not yet been possible to use an electrostatic relay Z:
i build that meets the requirements of practical needs.
The electrostatic relay according to the invention consists of two capacitor plates between which a liquid is enclosed. The pressure increase that arises in the liquid when the two capacitor plates are attracted to one another is used to produce a mechanical movement.
An exemplary embodiment is shown in the drawing. The two capacitor plates 1 and 2 are made of thin, flexible material and, together with the insulating intermediate layer 3, form a capsule which contains the liquid 4. This liquid is connected to the interior of a second capsule 6 through a bore 5. This is closed by a membrane 7 and also completely filled with the liquid. If the capacitor plates 1 and 2 receive a different potential through the supply line 8, they attract each other and increase the pressure of the liquid 4. As a result, the membrane 7 is pressed against the contact piece 9 and closes an electrical circuit via the lines 10.
When using suitable insulation materials, the capacitor plates can be charged with very high potentials. This results in high forces on the unit area. On the other hand are. the masses to be accelerated are extremely small, so that the relay responds in an extremely short time.
The capacitor plates 1 and 2 can, for. B. consist of thin, elastic sheet metal if the liquid 4 itself is sufficiently insulated. Otherwise, they can be made of insulating skins that have a metal coating on the outside. It goes without saying that the device can be used not only to close electrical circuits, but also to produce other mechanical effects ..
