EMI1.1

EMI1.1
Compared to the already known processes for the production of matrices and printing plates from the condensation products of phenols and formaldehyde (phenolaldehyde resins), the invention aims to create a process. by which such plates can be produced more easily and quickly. which are more malleable and do not adhere to type material.
According to the invention, a layer made of suitable fibrous material is soaked with condensation products of phenols and formaldehyde, but only to the extent that the fiber layer is not completely saturated. The layer produced in this way is used as a base for the die or printing plate, and a metal foil covering is expediently applied to its surface with a suitable binding agent, for example phenol aldehyde varnish. attached. The foils are preferably made of equal parts lead and tin and have the purpose of preventing the lettering material from sticking during the production of matrices or printing plates.
According to the invention, the base consisting of fibrous material can also be produced from several layers impregnated with condensation products in the manner described above, in which case the individual layers are then likewise connected to one another by a phenol aldehyde resin. The surface of the layers of fibrous material thus united is then also covered with a film.
As a result of the fact. that the fiber layers are not saturated with the condensation products of phenol and formaldehyde. the plate produced in this way can be shaped more easily and better during its later processing. In order to make the material even more flexible and pliable during molding, according to the invention, the fiber layer is completely saturated with a liquid, expediently with water, before molding.
During the shaping, which takes place with the application of pressure and heat, vapors are then formed; in order to allow them to escape during molding, the pressure on the plate is suddenly released at an appropriate time, whereupon, after the vapors have escaped, the pressure is applied again and the plate is completely finished.
EMI1.2
the action of heat and pressure in the manufacture of the matrices hardens and solidifies faster.
Instead of water, however, alcohol or another volatile substance or, finally, a solid solvent of the phenolaldehyde resin can be used, but water has the advantage over all other agents that it soaks the fiber well and does not dissolve the resin used as an impregnating agent.
