PATENT ANSPRÜCHE : i.

Process and device for the production of hydrocyanic acid in an electric arc.

If hydrogen cyanide is produced in the known manner by passing gases containing carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen through the electric arc, these gases are partially decomposed with the excretion of elemental carbon during the high heating required. The carbon deposited as soot on the insulation of the power supply lines interrupts the insulation and causes short circuits, which under certain circumstances can even endanger the furnace.

This deficiency cannot be completely eliminated by using the gases in a very strong dilution, i.e. with a low percentage of carbon. In addition, this measure increases energy consumption and naturally provides the hydrogen cyanide in a very dilute state.

It has now been found that it is possible to avoid this interference, which prevents the technical implementation of the process, or at least to limit it to a harmless level, if the insulation and power lines, especially the points of contact between the two in the furnace, are made with gases that do not contain elemental carbon included, washed around.

It is expedient to choose purging gases which have little or no at all
 EMI1.1
emitted radiant heat can decompose with the deposition of carbon.

In order to keep the elemental carbon released during the synthesis away from power lines and insulation, it is expedient to place them in an adjoining room adjoining the furnace.

At the same time, the flushing gases bring about advantageous cooling of the insulation.

You will e.g. B. blown tangentially.

An apparatus for carrying out the method is shown in the drawing in an exemplary embodiment schematically in FIG. 1 in longitudinal section and in FIG. 2 in cross section along the line 2-2 of FIG.

The side room b, in which the power line c with its insulation d and the gas-tight packing e is arranged, is connected to the furnace chamber a. To feed the
Purge gases are used in lines gl, g2 and hl. k2.
