Process for the production of iron-containing, lumpy contact material with the help of basic substances.
The contact material previously used in the production of hydrogen, consisting predominantly of porous iron-containing ores, becomes unusable after a relatively short time due to the action of the reacting gases. All efforts to increase the durability of the contact good have so far been unsuccessful. Even the method known from Austrian patent specification No. 72430, according to which iron-containing contact mass is interspersed with basic bodies during its production, does not produce a perfect product.
According to the invention, the new method for producing iron-containing, lumpy contact material consists in treating natural or artificial iron-containing material simply on the outside with bodies, compounds or mixtures which have a basic effect and are brought into powder, pulp or solution form and which prevent sintering that the basic bodies form a thin protective layer on the reaction product. This prevents the reacting gases from penetrating the pores and thus prevents the pieces from disintegrating and also prevents sintering on their surface by separating the acidic dust from the components of the contact material.
Since in the new process only a surface treatment of the contact material takes place, only relatively small amounts of additives are required. Another advantage of the method is that all basic substances z. B. hydrates, carbonates or nitrates of alkalis or alkaline earths can be used, which can be converted into a powder, pulp or solution form.
The layer can be produced in any desired manner.
