Trockenelement.

Dry element.
The invention relates to a drying element of a new type which, in a special embodiment, is modeled on the Leclänche element. The schematic drawing shows the new element as a Leclanché element, namely in Fig. I in vertical section and in Fig. 2 and 3 in the horizontal direction A-A of Fig. I.
The depolarization mass 1 forms the positive pole. It encloses or contains one or more current conductors 2 and forms one or more containers 3 (cavity) in which the electrolyte and the solution pole, e.g. B. zinc pole 5 is located. The element is on the outside of an insulating sleeve 6, for. B. from paraffin or lacquered paper surrounded. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through a multi-chamber element according to A-A of Fig. I. The mass 1 is divided by the cavities or chambers 3 so often that its walls are given a thickness that allows even use of the brownstone. This solves the question of how one can produce advantageously working dry elements of any size.
The required shape can be given to the depolarization mass 1 in a known manner in that it, moistened with electrolyte, is pressed or tamped into molds containing cores and then dried. It is more labor-saving, however, to press or tamp the mass in molds that determine its external shape and in which the shell 6 is located and then to press wedge-shaped cores into this molded mass under high pressure in order to create the electrode spaces (cavities, container 3) to manufacture.
This way of working, depolarization masses of high strength and high specific weight are obtained, which makes it possible to achieve a greater electrical output from the room unit compared to the. first-mentioned procedure enables.
The electrical current can be diverted from the depolarization mass 1 in a known manner by means of one or more carbon rods pressed into it. However, it is also more advantageous to derive the current through a plastic mass 2, consisting of pressed carbon or graphite powder or a mixture of both in combination with a water (electrolyte) repellent substance, such as, for. B. paraffin, mountain wax, pitch or the like.
These plastic current conductors are expediently tamped into the molds at the same time as the depolarization compound 1, so that they connect well to it. Can metallic souls? (Fig. I to 3) are inserted into the current arrester ground, which are surrounded by insulating rings 9 to protect against contact with the depolarization mass.
To the metal inserts 7, the connecting wires for. other elements are soldered when these are combined into batteries. The current conductors of the depolarization mass can also make the connection of the elements to batteries without soldering through direct contact with the zinc pole ends which protrude from the element, whereby their easy replacement is made possible. The use of plastic masses to divert the current from the spongy depolarization mass is a major advance in the construction of the elements.
While up to now the decrease of the current has been taken care of with coals, which have been given a large contact surface with the mass or the depolarization measures have even been applied in coal crucibles, here the construction of the element is based on the fact, which has been proven by numerous experiments, that it is not so much on Size

element about 1/2 to i g of this, which is why there is more space for depolarization mass in the dry element of the new type than in the old one.
After removing the depolarization mass from the mold, it is dried in the open air or artificially in order to give it the necessary strength. The electrode spaces 3 can then be filled with gelatinized electrolyte, the main component of which in Leclanche elements is known to be salmiac. The zinc pole 5 is then inserted into the electrode space 3. It is best made of perforated zinc sheet, which is located in a paper or fabric bag 10, which is filled with electrolyte and a short circuit between Z; nk and mass prevents. For flashlight batteries, the individual elements are manufactured in the desired oval shape and installed in series, two or three insulated, in the usual paper tube.
The elements can also be filled with solid pathogen salts that have dried in porous or swelling bodies, such as blotting paper, tragacanth or the like, and are dissolved with water when the element is put into use. The embodiment shown in FIG. 1 is used for this, in which a channel 11, which can be closed by means of a plug 12, leads through the potting compound 13 into the electrode space 3, which allows water to be poured in when the element is used.
The progress made by building this dry element compared to the elements now in use is multiple: the element can be produced with less effort; its design is suitable for elements of any size; it allows a very good utilization of the substances (zinc and brownness) and therefore and because the depolarization mass is specifically heavier than with the usual elements due to the stronger pressure and because the conductors take up a very small space, more electrical work like from a given space the elements currently in use. For flashlight batteries of the new type is z. B. about twice as much depolarization mass in the usual battery sleeve than in batteries of the old type.
