Process for the production of artificial millstones for wet milling.
The process for the production of artificial millstones from magnesia and chloromagnesium liquor, which is the subject of the present invention, not only makes the previously usual melting work and thus the necessary kilns superfluous, but also allows the millstones produced by cold means to be used under permanent or temporary exposure to water or moisture, without fear of damage or destruction of the millstone vessel. The essence of the invention consists in making use of the fact, known per se, that when magnesium hydroxide and chloromagnesium lye are mixed, heat is generated (similar to when lime and water are mixed).
If wax, ceresin, stearin or paraffin in as finely powdered a state as possible is added to the magnesia before it is digested in the chlorine magnesium lye, it is achieved that this additive is then evenly distributed throughout the entire mass used to manufacture the stone Mixing of the mixture with the magnesium chloride solution, the finished, artificial stone body becomes thoroughly water-resistant with regard to its entire structure.
In order to achieve an even more intimate combination of the fatty or oil-containing admixture with the stone structure, the finished stone body can subsequently be heated in containers or rooms that are to be set up accordingly, whereby any small wax, stearin, etc. balls that may still be present are melted and this ensures that all stone particles are covered and penetrated by the melted wax or stearin mass. The proportions of the individual components depend on the respective requirements.
For the production of softer stones, about six parts by weight of quartz, emery or emery substitute, one part by weight of chlorine magnesium hydroxide and one part by weight of magnesium hydroxide or magnesium hydrate are used, while for the production of medium-hard or harder stones, fewer parts by weight of emery, emery substitute or the like are to be selected. The amount of the oil or fat-containing additive must correspond to the desired water resistance.
