Method of treating seaweed.
The invention relates to a method for treating seaweed in order to make it usable as a mass in paper manufacture, in the stucco industry and in some other fields as a substitute for cotton; It consists in dividing the fresh, moist seaweed to the degree of fineness desired for the various purposes in cardboard and paper manufacture Chlorinated lime, unslaked
EMI1.1
The mixture is left to stand for half an hour, after which the seaweed mass is lifted from the liquid specified above and treated with 1/8 kg of oxalic acid in another container.
The two liquids mentioned can be used three times, although it should be noted that each subsequent treatment takes longer.
When the seaweed mass has softened sufficiently, it is rinsed out and then dried or the moisture is partially removed by pressing. After rinsing, 1/2 kg of soda is added to the seaweed mass. The kelp can now be brought to the Hollander and treated like cellulose and wood pulp. A previous grinding is not necessary, as the seaweed mass is sufficiently finely divided before bleaching and cleaning. It is a fact that no by-products are deposited and that all components of the kelp are used.
