Contact strip for pantographs for electric railways.

According to the present invention, contact strips for the current collectors of electrical railways are made from a silite which is as uniform as possible over its entire mass and, above all, free of cavities and larger pores. manufactured. Silite consists mainly of silicon carbide, or silicon: nitrogen carbon, compounds with or without the addition of free carbon and other substances.

It is known to manufacture dynamo brushes, sliding contacts and similar current-carrying parts subjected to friction from carbon with an addition of silicon. So far, however, Silit has not been used for contact strips for the pantographs of electrical railways. The use was all the more distant because, on the one hand, the contact strips of the pantographs are exposed to extremely strong fire effects, to which substances such as silite are very sensitive due to their high silicon content, and on the other hand, the requirement has always been made that the contact strips should be made of the softest possible material so that they do not attack the contact lines, which are made of very soft metal, too much. But it was known of the Silit that it is extraordinarily hard and particularly suitable for whetstones.

The idea of using Silit for contact strips of current collectors was therefore so far removed from the outset that the possibility of using it was not considered at all. It has now been shown, however, that Silit is extremely useful for contact pieces of this type. While the ordinary contact pieces made of carbon wear out very quickly and form grooves, Silit retains a very even surface and, surprisingly, wears the cables very little. The prerequisite is careful production of the contact pieces so that they are as homogeneous as possible and in particular have no cavities and no harder grains embedded between softer parts.
