Description

Method and device for sterilizing and cleaning liquids.

It has already been proposed that any liquids can be cleaned by subjecting them to electrolysis by means of electrodes made of aluminum or aluminum alloys, which are immersed in the liquids. When the electrical current, which is generated between the electrode plates by means of the electrolyte, passes through, the treated substance decomposes, causing a separation of gases on the electrodes and decomposition of the latter, which gradually dissolve in the electrolyte. These two processes together cause the formation of aluminum oxyhydrate, which, as they say, flocculates naturally.

These flakes surround the substances suspended in the treated liquid and as soon as these are carried along by the movement of the ions passing through the liquid between the electrodes, they are deposited on the electrodes. The precipitate that adheres to the plates prevents safe cleaning and also brings with it the risk of contamination of the solutions to be treated by the suspended substances which can adhere to the electrodes after they have been introduced into the liquid to be cleaned. In order to overcome these disadvantages, it has been proposed to move the electrodes in the liquid or to set the latter in motion during the treatment, which, however, necessitates complicated devices or the application of a rather considerable driving force.

According to the present invention, these disadvantages are avoided in that a potential difference is generated between the two electrode plates which is not sufficient to generate the electrolysis of the substances to be treated. It has been shown here that no decomposition of the liquid and no dissolution of the electrode plates occurs. No ion chain then forms in the liquid which could lead the floating substances to the electrodes and thus no precipitation on the latter either, which is why it is no longer necessary to subject the liquid or the electrodes to constant movement.

It has been shown that the substances in the electrical field accumulate and agglomerate and then separate in the liquid mass parallel to the electrodes, depending on their specific weight, and either float on the liquid or sink to the bottom of the container . By clarification or filtration, it is then easy to remove the impurities that have separated out in this way, all the more since the individual particles separated in this way can no longer cling to one another, even if the precipitate that they form is shaken or stirred up with the liquid mass.
