Process for the production of hydrogen cyanide.
EMI1.1
compounds such as ammonia or nitrogen oxide.
If completely pure, catalytically active metals are used as catalysts in this representation of hydrogen cyanide, it does not succeed. to achieve high yields of hydrogen cyanide. Under otherwise identical working conditions, these yields can now be increased significantly if the catalyst in addition to at least one catalytically active metal, such as. B. iron, nickel!, Cobalt, copper, chromium, magnesium, manganese or titanium, or at least one metal compound, e.g. B. the alkali or alkaline earth metals, earth metals, molybdenum, uranium, tungsten, osmium or titanium. To this increased reaction
EMI1.2
Only such admixtures as an additive to the actual contact body are to be avoided that are metal oxides under the given conditions, such as e.g. B.
Sulfur, phosphorus etc. are able to be released to the contact body.
The new catalyst can advantageously be formed from a catalytically active metal in addition to its nitride or oxide in addition to nitride and oxide.
The metals or nitrides used as contact bodies are expediently prepared from their compounds at a temperature of at most 7000 C at the beginning of the process.
The effectiveness of the catalyst is increased if the metal or its oxide or
Nitride is first heated in air or in oxygen for a short time in order to bring about a superficial oxidation, or the metal, its oxide or the compounds which change into oxides on heating in the presence of oxygen or
Air to be annealed.
EMI1.3
obtained that iron oxide is intimately mixed with about 2% potassium hydroxide, moistened and dried and then the granular mass is poured into the contact tube. The gas mixture, eg. B. carbon monoxide and ammonia, act at about 5000 C. whereupon hydrogen cyanide is formed immediately through contact. which can then be further processed into cyanides in a known manner.
The formation of the contact body can be carried out with the help of reducing gases from oxides before introduction into the contact furnace or by the reaction gases themselves.
PATENT CLAIMS: I. Process for the production of hydrogen cyanide by the catalytic reaction of

characterized in that the contact body used contains, in addition to one or more metals, certain admixtures, such as compounds of alkalis, alkaline earths, earth metals, molybdenum, uranium, osmium, titanium etc. or the corresponding ores.
