changing tensions circulating in a circle. While about half of the electrodes have a positive sign, discharges take place between these electrodes and the mercury of the rectifier. Depending on the progression of the tensions in the circle, the entire multiple arc also moves. With a certain, moderate voltage drop in the arc, a pulsating direct current forms, the waves of which are flatter the greater the number of winding divisions w a larger number of them distributed.
Obviously, with the device described, one can achieve the relief of the electrodes and the smoothing of the pulsating direct current up to any desired degree with the simplest means, since the further improvement of the device only requires the addition of new connection points.
The above only speaks of mercury rectifiers, since this has so far been practically the sole representative of the previously discussed type of converter. Of course, the explanations also relate analogously to converters in which the mercury is replaced by another metal.
