The immediate and complete conversion of the halogens into harmless 8a also work! zc, chlorides, but with the formation of ordinary oxygen. They also remove any ozone and water peroxide dissolved in the water by releasing ordinary oxygen. However, other oxygen-rich compounds can also be produced. When clear, colorless water mixed with chlorine is passed over mixtures of manganese permutite and nickel permangite, violet permanganate solution is produced which, if not used for oxidation, can be discolored again by reduced manganese permutite.

Depending on the composition of the water and the difficulties caused by the oxidation of the dissolved compounds or the killing of the living organisms contained in the water and depending on the purpose for which the water is to be purified, one can thus choose suitable catalysts for rapid and complete Implementation of the additives used in the desired compounds or for the simultaneous formation of free oxygen in gaseous form, or for the formation of ozone or permanganate. If, for example, only metal oxides are to be oxidized more highly (iron and manganese bicarbonate), the use of porous bodies alone is sufficient.

During sterilization, on the other hand, manganese-containing catalysts are expediently used in order to achieve a reliable effect in order to promote the formation of ozone. The formation of permanganate acids can be used if fine at the same time as the oxidation

fill out. Nickel-containing catalysts are recommended to remove residual quantities of free chlorine or to remove ozone or hydrogen peroxide from the water.

Compared to the methods used up to now, the method described here offers, in addition to the more intensive effect, the great advantage that the intended conversions take place immediately and completely. It is no longer necessary to give water that has been treated with chlorine or other substances of the halogen group a lot of help afterwards or to store it in open pots in the air for a long time or to add suitable chemical additives (Thiosu fat) to improve the smell and taste. The whole process of water purification can be carried out as simple filtration without any interruption.

If catalytic bodies are used, the additives are immediately and completely either converted into harmless salts (calcium chloride) that are soluble in water, or they become saturated with those contained in the water
