Das Anlassen geschieht, indem in die verdichtete und erwärmte Luft bezw. Gemisch Brennstoff eingeführt wird, der sich infolge der hohen Temperatur der Luft oder des Gemisches entzündet und dadurch Volumenvergrösserung der Luft oder des Gemisches und endlich Auswärtsgang des Kolbens bewirkt.
