@u dry, the present procedure is intended. It essentially consists in (leaving the washed nitrocellulose in a stream of air heated to the appropriate temperature, drying it and impregnating it with dry ammonia vapors. The ammonia completely neutralizes the small amounts of sulfuric acid and nitric acid that remain, dries the nitrocellulose and gives it to it a weakly alkaline reaction.
The execution of this method is described below using an example.
The device used is illustrated in the drawing in a vertical section.
The nitrocellulose, washed and dehydrated in a centrifugal machine, is spread out in thin layers on racks or hurdles made of tinned iron or copper.
The racks are located in a chamber or room b, which is clad with panels. The (11 'space b is arranged in such a way that it can be ventilated. A fan c supplies a stream of air which is heated to the appropriate temperature. A part of this air stream opens through a closed box d i before it enters the chamber the bottom of which is an intimate mixture of about three parts of powdered quicklime, slightly moistened with water, and one part of ammonium sulphate or ammonium carbonate, which have also been brought into powder form.
The action of these two substances on one another causes a slow evolution of dry ammonia gas, which mixes with the air flow passing through the box
EMI2.1
Room h. in thorn the nitrocellulose is spread, mixes.
The heated air containing ammonia neutralizes the small quantities of nitric acid and sulfuric acid, which are reduced by the capillarity in the nitrocellulose, and gives the nitrocellulose a slight alkaline reaction by drying the nitrocellulose at the same time.
