Process for the conversion of unsaturated fatty acids or their glycerides
In saturated compounds.- Iu of British Patent No. 515 A. D. 1903, the reduction of unsaturated fatty acids such as oleic acid or its esters by treating the unsaturated body with hydrogen in the presence of a metallic catalyst, such as. B. nickel, described as Kat \ lysation8mitt. The serving metal is used either alone as a powder or distributed over a suitable carrier made of porous material, such as pumice stone, and hydrogen is passed through the mixture.

The types of implementation of the method described there have certain disadvantages.

When nickel or other metallic catalytic agent is used in such finely divided state as has been found necessary for the effectiveness of the process, it is difficult to economically separate it from the treated body after completion of the reaction, while when the metal is distributed over such a carrier, as indicated in this patent, the effect is slow and compared to the amount of treated

The present invention now consists in using a finely divided substance as a carrier for the metallic catalyst, which makes it possible to carry out the process more economically and more rapidly. The catalytically active metal

For example, when using nickel as a catalyst, the catalyst mass is conveniently prepared in the following way:
An inert, porous, finely divided or powdered substance, such as. B. Kieselguhr, mountain meal,

contains, soaked and then with. a body, for example alkali hydroxide, treated, which nickel hydroxide precipitates.

The entire mass consisting of the carrier and the nickel hydroxide is then washed in the usual way with water to remove the soluble compounds (alkali metal sulfate), then dried and treated with hydrogen at 300 "to 500".

The finished product contains, if kieselguhr was used as a carrier. about 30% nickel. Of course, other soluble nickel salts can also be used in the same way instead of nickel sulfate. If nickel nitrate was chosen, the production of the catalyst mass is even easier in that the alkali treatment is dispensed with and the nickel nitrate

The unsaturated substance to be treated is placed in a pressure vessel equipped with a stirrer and heated to a temperature at which no decomposition takes place. The catalyst composition prepared as described above is then added, the pressure vessel is closed and hydrogen is forced through the mixture, the unsaturated substance, the catalyst and the gas being mixed extremely intimately. It has been found that the hydrogenation proceeds faster, the greater the pressure under which the hydrogen is pressed into the pressure vessel.

In this way, it is possible to carry out a rapid reduction using very small amounts of the metallic catalyst. Even as little as #% of the weight of the treated metal. unsaturated body has been found to be effective.

Furthermore, since the metal rests on an extremely easily movable carrier, the catalyst shown as described has all the advantages of the sole use of finely divided metal, without the disadvantages which arise from the use of the metal alone, since the

Washing with a solvent such as gasoline can be used repeatedly for treatment of fresh amounts of unsaturation; if it shows reduced effectiveness after such repeated use, it can be brought back to full effectiveness by reduction.
