Process for the production of protective covers on carbon electrodes, in particular for electric ovens.
For the purpose of making the surfaces of carbon electrodes for electric ovens resistant to the effects of oxidizing hot gases, which are known to cause severe burns to the unprotected electrodes, they have hitherto been clad with wire mesh, sheet metal, with a galvanic metal coating, enamel, glaze or transferring the outermost layers in carbide or graphite. Most of these procedures have the disadvantage that they are cumbersome and cumbersome to carry out
EMI1.1
on the surfaces has the particular disadvantage that a material suitable for producing such a glaze, whose coefficient of thermal expansion differs sufficiently little from that of the electrode material, has not yet been found.
According to the invention, a material is used to protect the electrode surfaces, which, when applied to the same in a granular state and tightly joined, is held in its position by embedding in the electrode material and which does not undergo any noticeable burn-off or melt flow at the temperatures occurring in operation becomes.
Depending on whether the surfaces to be provided with the protective covering must be highly conductive or not, metals, e.g. B. iron, aluminum, copper, or other materials such as quartz, slate, magnesite, carborundum, blast furnace slag, aluminum oxide, come into use. When selecting these materials, care must of course be taken to ensure that the protective material cannot contaminate the melt due to chemical reactions.
The present method can be used equally advantageously for those electrodes which are pressed out of a recipient by pressing the electrode material
EMI1.2
in a form or by ramming and re-pressing.
The embedding of the protective material can either be effected directly during the molding process or in such a way that the grains penetrate the surfaces of the not yet hardened electrode, e.g. B. by rolling or hammering, are driven in.
