Versuche haben ergeben, dass den Sulfochloriden aromatischer Kohlenwasserstoffe, wenn in passender Form angewendet, die Eigenschaft zukommt, tierische Schädlinge, wie Warmer, Schnecken, Maulwurfsgrillen, Ameisen, Blattläuse, Käfer, Raupen und dgl. sowie auch Nagetiere von Kulturplanzen, und Bremsen,'Stechfliegen und Stechmlicken usw. von Menschen und Haustieren zu vertreiben und fernzuhalten. Wegen seiner günstigen Eigenschaften (nicht zu grosse Zersetzlicbkeit bei Luftzutritt, feste Form und leichte Löslichkeit in den meisten Lösungsmitteln, denen es in geringer Menge schon seinen scharfen Geruch verleiht) sowie auch wegen seiner leichten Beschaffung im Handel hat sich das p-Toluolsulfochlorid zur praktischen Verwendung als besonders geeignet erwiesen.
Um die beabsichtigte Wirkung dieses Stoffes gut auszunutzen, wird derselbe entweder mit trockenen festen Verteilungsmitteln, wie Kohle, Kieselgur, Sand, Gips usw., mit oder ohne Zusatz von säurebindenden Stoffen, wie Kalzium-oder Magnesiumkarbonat, fein zermahlen angewendet oder aber in passenden Lösungsmitteln aufgelöst, wobei ihrer chemischen Indifferenz halber zur Erzielung eines haltbaren Präparates namentlich raffinierte Erdölkohlenwasserstoffe in Betracht kommen. Der Gehalt dieser Mischungen oder Lösungen an p-Toluolsulfochlotid ist wechselnd und wird'in jedem Fall so bemessen, dass die zu schützenden pflanzlichen und tierischen Lebewesen durch die Berührung mit mässigen Mengen derselben noch keine, die zu bekämpfenden Schädlinge jedoch schon starke Schädigung erfahren.
Die pulverigen Mischungen dienen vorzugsweise zum Schutze der Pflanzen, indem man entweder diese selbst oder die sie umgebende Erde damit bestäubt oder davon in die von den Schädlingen begangenen Erdlöcher, Gängo und Schlupfwinkel einbringt. Die durch Auflösen erhaltenen Präparate, in welchen sich meist schon ein geringer Gehalt an p-Toluolsulfochlorid als wirksam erweist, seien es ölige oder solche von Fett-oder Wacbskonsistenz, dienen vorteilhaft zum Schutze von Menschen und Haustieren gegen stechende und blutsaugende Insekten, indem man die Haut damit bestreicht.
Eine zur Vertreibung von Pflanzenschädlingen passende Zusammensetzung ist beispielsweise eine zu einem feinen Pulver zermahlene, trockene Mischung von
20 Teilen p-Toluolsulfochlorid,
20 Teilen Kreide und
60 Teilen Kieselgur.
Der Kreidegehalt dieser bei Luftabschluss haltbaren Mischung beugt einer Schädigung der Pflanzen vor, indem er die Säuren, die bei der allmählichen Zersetzung des Sulfo- chlorids durch die Luftfeuchtigkeit entstehen, neutralisiert.
Ein wirksames Bremsenöl zum Schutz der Pferde und Rinder, das weder Hautreiz noch Haarausfall erzengt, wird beispielsweise erhalten, indem man 1 kg nicht zu flüchtigen raffinierten Mineralöls 3 g zuvor in wenig Öl warm gelösten p-Toluolsulfochlorids beifügt und gut damit vermengt.
In gleicher Weise gewinnt man durch Auflösen von p-Toluolsulfochlorid in warmem Vaselin ein Salbenpräparat, während eine erstarrte LÖsung'in geschmolzenem, nicht zu hartem Paraffin sich als Schutzmittel für Menschen gegen Stechmücken eignet, indem es auf den damit bestrichenen Hautpartien eine wenig eindringende, abstossend riechende dünne Schicht zurücklässt (Streichstifte).
