Procedure for charging electrical resistance ovens.
As is known, it is possible to avoid the formation of arcs on the upper electrode or the upper electrodes in electrical resistance furnaces if continuously or discontinuously operating feed devices are arranged in the upper part of the furnace in such a way that they move the charge in a mainly horizontal direction against said electrode or electrodes . The aim is to achieve a better concentration of the heat against the actual reduction zone.
According to the present invention, this purpose is achieved particularly well if the charge is not pressed directly against the electrode as usual, but against a point below the electrode tip. The empty spaces that cause the arcing generally arise just below the electrode and it has been found that in many cases they are more easily filled if the feed material is moved diagonally from below against the electrode, which is the case when the lateral displacement takes place towards a point below the electrode tip. This method is particularly advantageous when unmixed reducing carbon or a charge with a higher carbon content than usual is introduced into the furnace around the electrode.
The said charge, which generally has a lower specific weight than the rest of the charge, can be slid into the furnace more easily than if the lateral displacement takes place towards a higher point; furthermore, the variations in the resistance of the furnace, which occur with discontinuous indentation of the charge material, prove to be less unfavorable.
Any available feeder may be used in the practice of the invention, only it is necessary that the feeders be mounted a little lower than usual.
In the drawing, vertical sections of ovens according to the present invention are shown schematically in FIGS. 1 and 2.
In Fig. 1, 1 is a bottom electrode and 2 is an upper central electrode into which the charge is filled. It is assumed here that the charge in the vicinity of the electrode consists essentially of carbon, while the material to be reduced or melted, e.g. H. Lime in the manufacture of calcium carbide, which encloses the coal charge. 3 designates the feed hopper with screw conveyors 4. which push the feed into the furnace in a horizontal direction, namely towards a point below the lower tip of the electrode. As a result of the shifting of the charging material obliquely upwards, any empty spaces below the electrode tip are immediately filled so that arcing is prevented.
In the embodiment of FIG. 2, pistons are used in the side walls of the furnace.
