Als Reduktionsmittel ist vorzugsweise kohlenstoffhaltiges Material anzuwenden, wie z. B. Koksstaub, puiverförmige Kohle, Holzkohle, pulverisierter Petroleumkoks oder kohlenstoffoder kohlenwasserstoffhaltige Stoffe in irgend einer anderen Form. Der grösste Teil des Schwefels wird aus den Sulfiden bei der Behandlung in dem oberen Ofenteil ausgetrieben ;
beim Übertritt des Gutes mit seinem verbleibenden Schwefelgehalt und anderen Verunreinigungen in die oberste Etage des unteren Ofenteiles vermischt sich mit ihm der kohlenhaltige Zuschlag, wobei das gesamte im Gut enthaltene Sulfat reduziert wird, so dass der verbleibende Schwefelgehalt durch Anwendung einer Temperatur von nur etwa 650"C ausgetrieben werden kann, gegenüber Temperaturen von 850 bis 10000 C, die gewöhnlich in dem unteren Ofenteil erforderlich sind.
Werden die Verbrennungsprodukte der kohlenstoffhaltigen Substanz in dem unteren Ofenteil durch die vom Material verschlossen gehaltene Öffnung verhindert, in den oberen Teil des Ofens zu gtangpn. so ist für den unteren Ofenteil ein besonderer Gasaustritt 11 vorgesehen, durch weichen sowohl diese Verbrennungsprodukte als auch die in dem unteren Ofenteil Ausgetriebenen
