Drive device for the flywheel of a gyroscope for self-propelled
Torpedoes and the like
The invention relates to a device for driving the flywheel of a gyroscope for self-propelled torpedoes and the like. By a propellant which is fed through two diametrically opposed nozzles to the periphery of the flywheel. The invention aims in particular to reduce the weight and the space requirement of the drive device as far as possible.
It is already known to drive the flywheel of the gyroscope of a self-propelled torpedo by means of compressed air which was fed to the flywheel through two diametrically opposite nozzles attached to the two pivot pins of the vertical ring. So far, particular emphasis has been placed on keeping the mutual position of the nozzles and the flywheel unchanged, while the vertical ring could move freely with respect to the nozzles that pass through this ring. This arrangement requires a considerable width of the ring at the points at which the nozzles pass and naturally results in an increase in the weight and the space required by the gyroscope.
As is well known, the duration of the action of the compressed air or other propellant on the flywheel is very short. the mutual position of the flywheel and propellant nozzles only has to remain unchanged during this period; During the further course of the torpedo, since the propellant supply is cut off again, it is valid which position these parts assume with respect to one another. As a result, the nozzles can be attached to a part of the gyroscope that is movable relative to the flywheel. According to the invention, this movable part is the vertical ring of the gyroscope.
An embodiment of the new drive device is shown in the drawing.
According to the invention, each of the two diametrically opposed nozzles is divided into two parts, of which one part a, which is closed to the propellant supply line, is attached to the pivot b or c of the vertical ring d of the gyroscope, while the other part f is mounted in the ring d, which is opposite the swing

When the flywheel is stationary, the two channels a1 and each nozzle are in one direction and are held in this position by a locking device of any type until the torpedo is fired. After starting the flywheel, s; ch move the ring d and the nozzle part mounted in it with respect to the flywheel g without disadvantageous consequences.
The device described offers the advantage that the shape of the ring d does not need to be changed. The ring d only has bulging bulges at the points where the nozzles pass through, which considerably reduce the weight and space requirement of the device compared to the conventional devices with two nozzles,

he can advance towards the fixed nozzles.
In the case of the drive device described, the lower pivot pin c can also retain its usual pointed shape.
