<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The invention relates to an arrangement of a matrix plate for fiber optic luminous characters and sleeves for fixing the ends of glass fiber light guides in the matrix plate, the sleeve being made of plastic and the matrix plate made of metal.
Such a sleeve is used in the so-called "Schott system" from Schott-Glaswerke, Wiesbaden. In this system, characters made of halftone dots with a diameter of approximately 4 mm are displayed on a matrix plate. The halftone dots are formed by the individual ends of multi-arm light guides that can be freely positioned in the holes in the matrix plate. An attached light guide cone enlarges the light point and focuses the emerging light in a smaller beam angle, which increases the beam intensity in the axial direction. The common end of the light guide is illuminated by a halogen lamp.
Fiber optic illuminated signs currently used for traffic management (in particular variable message signs) have a matrix plate which consists of either 2 to 4 mm thick sheet metal or 8 to 10 mm thick plastic.
The ends of the light guides are fastened in the holes of a sheet metal matrix plate using plastic expansion sleeves. These expansion sleeves are used exclusively to hold the light guide perpendicular to the plate and thus ensure that the direction of radiation is maintained in the axial direction. These expansion sleeves protrude from the front of the matrix plate and, because they do not seal tightly, require a cover plate for weather protection.
In the case of a plastic matrix plate, however, no sleeves are used since the light guide ends are held perpendicular to the matrix plate in the drilled holes due to the thickness of the matrix plate.
These ends of the light guide are even and tight with the front of the matrix plate, so that no cover is required.
All fiber optic illuminated signs must comply with protection class IP 54 and must remain operational in a temperature range between -20oC and 800C.
A fiber optic illuminated sign system is known from EP-A 340 463. This known illuminated sign system has a plate made of thermoplastic plastic, in which, as described above, the optical waveguides end directly in the holes. The illuminated sign system known from EP-A 340 463 should be used in particular as a motor vehicle rear light.
The invention has for its object an arrangement of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
to provide the type mentioned at the outset, which allows the use of a matrix plate made of metal and in which the ends of the light guides are nevertheless securely fixed in the comparatively thin matrix plate.
According to the invention, this object is achieved in that the sleeves are inserted sealingly into the holes provided in the matrix plate and in that the sleeves are even and flush with the front of the matrix plate.
With the sleeve provided according to the invention, the disadvantages of plastic plates with a cover are avoided, since a matrix plate made of metal can be used. In the invention, the sleeves punched into the holes in the matrix plate are inserted, the sleeves sealing the holes and being flush with the front of the matrix plate. The light guide ends are then inserted into these sleeves.
Further preferred and advantageous embodiments of the sleeve according to the invention, which can contribute to solving the problem, are the subject of dependent claims 2 to 5.
When using the arrangement according to the invention, complete tightness of the matrix plate is also achieved in the region of the holes provided in it, in which the light guides are received, so that a front pane serving as a cover can be dispensed with. The front surface of the matrix plate with the sleeves and optical fibers used makes the front side dirty.
In particular, it is preferred to manufacture the matrix plate from aluminum 4 mm thick, which is easily possible because of the sleeves used according to the invention. The thermal expansion of a matrix plate made of aluminum is very low, so that the housing in which it is accommodated is less stressed by thermal expansion and can therefore be dimensioned weaker.
Since a metal plate is used which only needs to be about half as thick as the usual plastic plates of fiber optic illuminated signs, there is the advantage in terms of production technology that the holes in the matrix plate can be simply punched in the desired arrangement.
Further details and features of the invention will become apparent from the following description of the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing. 1 shows a matrix plate in view, FIG. 2 shows, partly in section, a connection of one end of one
3rd
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Glass fiber light guide in a matrix plate, Fig. 3 shows a section through a hole in the matrix plate and Fig. 4 shows a sleeve in axial section.
Holes 2 are provided in the matrix plate of a fiber optic luminous sign shown in view in FIG. 1 after a certain distribution, so that different symbols (traffic signs and the like) can be represented with the luminous signs.
In the exemplary embodiment shown, the matrix plate 1 consists of 4 mm thick aluminum sheet and the holes 2 provided in it have the shape shown in FIG. H. the holes 2 consist of a parallel-walled section 3 and a section 4 widening towards the front 6 of the plate 1.
In each hole 2 in the plate 1 sleeves 5 made of plastic (e.g. a thermoplastic) are used. It can be seen from Fig. 2 that the front end of the sleeve 5 is flush with the front 6 of the plate 1, i. H. the front end surface 7 of the sleeve 5 lies in the same plane as the front 6 of the matrix plate 1.
The shape of the sleeve 5 can be seen in an example from the sectional view of FIG. 4. The sleeve 5 has a cylindrical inner surface and in its area adjacent to the front end an inwardly projecting, z. B. triangular in cross section, rib 11th
The outer surface of the sleeve 5 consists of a frustoconical section 12 which starts from the end surface 7 and merges into a cylindrical surface 13. At the end of the cylindrical jacket-shaped surface 13, a shoulder 14 is provided, from which an inclined surface, ie. H. a cylindrical jacket-shaped surface 15 leads to a further cylindrical surface 13.
The sleeve 5 is inserted with its end 16 forward from the front 6 of the matrix plate 1, the holes 2 provided for it, the insertion being able to take place by pushing in or pushing in the sleeves 5.
Because the sleeve 5 rests with its conical surface 12 on the conically widening section 4 of the hole 2 and the shoulder 14 rests on the back 8 of the matrix plate 1, the sleeve 5 is securely seated even if the matrix plate 1 is only thin ( e.g.
4 mm thick). In addition, a good seal is achieved. After the sleeves 5 have been inserted, the ends 21 of optical waveguides 20 are inserted into them, the front ends of which are pushed until they are flush with the end face 7 of the sleeve 5 and the front face 6 of the matrix plate 1. The fiber optic
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
conductors are held by the annular rib 11 in the inner wall 10 of the sleeve 5.
The other ends of the optical waveguides 20, not shown in FIG. 2, are, as is known per se, at least one light source with the interposition of diaphragms, mirrors and the like. Like. Assigned so that the desired characters can be displayed on the matrix plate 1.
It should also be pointed out that the embodiment of the matrix plate 1, in particular the arrangement of the holes 2 therein, is only an example and that the invention is not restricted to a specific arrangement of holes in the matrix plate 1.
In summary, the invention can be represented as follows, for example:
A sleeve 5 made of plastic is used to fix the ends 21 of fiber optic light guides 20 in metal matrix plates 1 of fiber optic luminous characters. The sleeve 5 has on its outer peripheral surface an annular shoulder 14 which bears against the rear 8 of the matrix plate 1. At its end located in the area of the front side 6 of the matrix plate 1, the outer peripheral surface of the sleeve 5 is widened conically (12), the conical surface 12 of the enlarged area of the sleeve 5 being received in a conically widening section of the holes 2 in the matrix plate 1 . As a result, the sleeve 5 is seated tightly in the matrix plate and is flush with the front side 6 of the matrix plate 1.
