US 4,410,213 A geoffenbart ist.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The invention relates to a piece of seating furniture with a seat, a movable back part and a movable footrest and with armrests which are connected to the back part in an articulated manner, the seating furniture being adjustable from a sitting position to at least one lying position.
With many pieces of seating furniture, in particular in the form of a sofa or an armchair, it is generally known to move the seat back or the back part from a sitting position into a lying position, while at the same time a footrest from an essentially vertical position (seating position of the seating furniture) ) is raised to a position in which the feet of a person are supported in the lying position of the seating furniture. For this change in the position of the movable parts of the seating furniture, it is usually sufficient to move the body from the sitting position to a lying position in order to bring the moving parts of the seating furniture into the corresponding position.
For the simultaneous movement of the back part and the footrest, these are generally pivoted on the seat surface and connected to one another via scissor linkage. The linkage necessary for the synchronous adjustment can either be arranged below the seat surface of an armchair or inside a sofa, as is disclosed, for example, in US Pat. No. 5,050,899 A or US Pat. No. 4,410,213. However, the moving parts - particularly in the case of a free-standing chair or armchair - can hardly be hidden optically, so that the external appearance of such seating is usually unsatisfactory.
However, it is also possible to include the two armrests in the linkage of the adjustment mechanism, as is known, for example, from garden chairs or garden loungers, the optical appearance of which, however, is usually also insufficient for the living area.
In this context, a seat and recliner armchair is known from AT 188.468 B, in which the backrest, seat surface, footrest and armrest are part of an articulated polygon. Furthermore, a couch is known from FR 2 535 592 A, in which an armrest can be moved along a guide device in the foot and head part of the couch, so that it moves from a position in which the outer contour of the couch is simulated into a raised position can be moved as an armrest.
A swivel chair is known from US Pat. No. 5,114,212 A, the armrests of which connect the back part to the seat surface or to a cross member arranged under the seat surface. The armrests are flexible and can be placed in several different positions.
An armchair with armrests is known from AT 201. 270 B, the seat and backrest of which can be adjusted independently of one another in different inclined positions and locked in the desired position. The backrest is connected to the seat part via flexible armrests.
The object of the present invention is to propose a piece of seating furniture with a movable back part and a movable footrest, which can be adjusted from a sitting position into at least one lying position, the corresponding adjustment mechanism being designed to be as simple as possible and to meet the aesthetic requirements in the living area.
This object is achieved according to the invention in that the armrests are designed to be elastically deformable at least in areas and connect the footrest to the back part. The solution according to the invention has no linkage beneath the seat of the seating furniture and only uses elastically deformable armrests, the deformation of which, when changing from the sitting position to the lying position, ensures that the height of the armrests is lowered in relation to the seat surface, the foot part or the footrest is raised.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, it is provided that each of the armrests is rotatably articulated on a console arranged on the side of the seat surface, the armrests being flexibly deformed when the back part is adjusted, which triggers a simultaneous change in position of the footrest.
According to the invention, it is provided in particular that each of the armrests, starting from the back part, has an essentially rigid first section, followed by a flexible area extending to the console, and a second, essentially rigid section adjoining the flexible area, which is connected to the footrest ,
According to the invention, the areas of different flexibility of the armrests with the same material can have different material thicknesses or different material densities or can be made from different materials. It is also possible that the areas of different flexibility of the armrests have different cross-sectional profiles. All measures can also be combined, whereby for a steady transition between the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
rigid sections of the armrests and the flexible area, for example by steadily increasing or decreasing the material thickness or changing the profile.
There are several versions for attaching the footrest. According to a first variant, the footrest can be flexible and rigidly attached to the ends of the two armrests facing away from the back part. However, it is also possible to make the footrest rigid and to attach it rotatably to the ends of the two armrests facing away from the back part.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, the ends of the two armrests facing away from the back part have a connecting element, which can either be rigid or allow a certain torsion in order to articulate a rigid footrest.
A particularly simple variant provides that the footrest is rigid and is fixedly connected to the ends of the two armrests facing away from the back part or is made in one piece with them.
Finally, according to a third embodiment variant, it is also possible for the footrest to be pivoted at the front end of the seat surface and to be connected to the ends of the two armrests at the end facing away from the seat surface by means of laterally arranged slide bearings.
Suitable materials for the armrests are, for example, flexible plastics, such as nylon, polyamide, fiberglass or steel, or a composite or a combination of these materials.
The invention is explained in more detail below with the aid of partially schematic drawings.
1 and 2 show the seating furniture according to the invention in a first embodiment, FIG. 1 showing the sitting position and FIG. 2 the lying position, FIG. 3 a detail from FIG. 2 in an oblique view, FIG. 4 an embodiment variant 2, FIG. 5 shows a detail from FIG. 4 in an oblique view, FIG. 6 shows a further embodiment variant of the seating furniture according to the invention in a representation according to FIG. 1, FIG. 7 shows a variant of the footrest in detail, 8 to 12 different design variants of the flexible armrest of the seating furniture according to the invention.
The individual design variants of the invention are shown in simplified form as a line model (without upholstery and covers) in order to emphasize the kinematic assignment of the individual components more clearly.
In the first embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 to 3, the seating furniture has a seat 1 with a movably articulated back part 2 and a movable footrest 3, which are connected by the two armrests 4 to the back part 2 via swivel joints 5 arranged on both sides of the backrest , Furthermore, the seating furniture has feet supporting the seat 1 (three or four feet or cantilever chairs), a substructure or only the schematically indicated foot 6, which can be designed to be rotatable and height-adjustable in a manner not shown. It is also possible to design the seating furniture according to the invention as a sofa or to arrange several seating furniture of this type on a common substructure.
To support the adjustment from the lying position to the sitting position, a spring element 11, for example a gas spring, can be arranged between the seat surface 1 and the back part 2.
The armrests 4 have a flexible area f in the front section, which has a greater curvature in the sitting position (FIG. 1) than in the lying position (FIG. 2). Each of the two armrests 4 is rotatably articulated on a console 7 arranged on the side of the seat 1, the armrests 4 being flexibly deformed in the area f when the back part 2 is adjusted, which leads to a simultaneous change in the position of the footrest 3 (see FIG. 2).
Essentially rigid sections s1 and s2 adjoin the flexible area f of each armrest 4, one of which s1 is articulated to the back part 2 and the other s2 to the footrest 3. The armrests 4 can consist, for example, of a plastic material, the material thickness of which in the rigid sections s1, S2 is greater than in the flexible area f, a constant change in the material thickness taking place between the rigid sections and the flexible area. Details on this are shown in FIG. 8 (smaller thickness in the area f) and in FIG. 9
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
(narrower width in area f) recognizable.
As shown in detail according to FIG. 3, the ends 4 ′ of the armrests 4 facing away from the back part 2 can have a connecting element 8, with which the footrest 3 is rigidly connected. In this embodiment variant, the footrest 3 is designed to be flexible in order to be better adapted to the height of the seat surface 1 in the lying position. For this purpose, pivoting (see position of the footrest shown in dashed lines) by the angle a is possible. The footrest 3 shown can also have padding, not shown here.
The embodiment variant shown in FIG. 4 differs from that according to FIG. 2 only in that the footrest 3 is essentially rigid and is rotatably attached to the ends 4 ′ of the two armrests 4 facing away from the back part 2. The rotatable fastening can also take place in that, according to the detail in FIG. 5, the connecting element 8 between the two ends 4 'of the armrests 4 is made of a flexible material which rotates or
Allows torsion around the angle a.
6 shows a further embodiment variant, in which the footrest 3 is articulated at the front end of the seat surface 1 with the aid of a swivel joint 9, the end of the footrest facing away from the seat surface 1 with the aid of slide bearings 10 arranged on the side is connected to the ends 4 'of the two armrests 4.
7 shows a simple embodiment variant, in which the footrest 3 is rigid and is fixedly connected to the ends 4 ′ of the two armrests 4 facing away from the back part 2. The footrest 3 has an angle a to the ends 4 'of the armrests 4, as a result of which it is better adapted to the height of the seat surface 1 in the lying position of the seating furniture.
10 to 12 show further design variants of the armrests 4. 10 shows a composite material made of spring steel 12, which is supported in the areas s1 and s2 by plastic, metal or wood elements 13.
The armrest 4 according to FIG. 11 has a, for example, U-shaped cross section in the rigid areas s1 and S2, which merges into a flat profile in the area f and is therefore flexible.
Finally, the armrest 4 according to FIG. 12 shows a greater material density in the rigid areas s1 and S2 than in the flexible area f.
