Abstract

A method is described for checking the gas tightness of the annealing chamber 11 of a furnace for the heat treatment of metallic annealed material under protective gas, the annealing chamber 11 sealed off in a gastight manner within a furnace chamber 9 being acted on by a protective gas at a positive pressure with respect to the furnace chamber 9. In order to create advantageous process conditions, it is proposed that the positive pressure in the annealing chamber be dissipated by reducing the protective-gas pressure and/or a pressure increase in the furnace chamber to a negative pressure, and the protective gas of the annealing chamber be monitored with regard to any changes in the oxygen content or the partial pressure of the oxygen.

Description

AT 409 187 BAT 409 187 B

The invention relates to methods for checking the gas tightness of the glow chamber of a furnace for the heat treatment of metallic annealing material under protective gas, wherein the glow chamber, which is sealed in a gas-tight manner within a furnace chamber, is subjected to a protective gas under an overpressure relative to the furnace chamber.

In order to avoid oxygen reactions, the heat treatment of metallic annealing materials is carried out under a protective gas atmosphere made of hydrogen, nitrogen or a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen. For this purpose, it is known, for example, for bright annealing metal strips, to provide door furnaces whose furnace space penetrates a muffle. These muffle furnaces have the advantage that the furnace space can be heated using gas burners without the flue gases being able to impair the protective gas atmosphere inside the muffle. The excess pressure of the protective gas, which is usually built up in the muffle and is intended to prevent contamination of the protective gas from the outside, leads to an escape of the protective gas if the muffle is leaked, which is flammable if the hydrogen content is greater than 5% and therefore if it emerges from the Muffle represents a potential hazard. Similar conditions arise when there are leaks in hood furnaces which have an externally heated protective hood for the heat treatment of the metallic annealing material, the protective hood being filled with protective gas under excess pressure relative to the furnace space surrounding the protective hood. Wherever an annealing chamber having a protective gas atmosphere is arranged within a furnace chamber for the heat treatment of a metallic annealing material, the gastightness of the annealing chamber should be ensured for proper furnace operation.

The invention is therefore based on the object to provide a method for checking the gas tightness of the glow space of a furnace for the heat treatment of metallic annealing material under protective gas on the condition that a simple check of the gas tightness of the glow space is possible without significantly disturbing the furnace operation.

The invention solves this problem in that the excess pressure in the annealing chamber is reduced to a negative pressure by lowering the protective gas pressure and / or an increase in pressure in the furnace chamber, and the protective gas in the annealing chamber is monitored for any changes in the oxygen content or partial pressure of the oxygen.

If the gas tightness of the glow chamber with respect to the furnace chamber is impaired by leaks, then air or flue gas from the furnace chamber penetrates into the glow chamber through the leaky points due to the reverse pressure conditions for checking the gas tightness. Regardless of whether the entrained bound or free oxygen reacts with the protective gas, the change in the oxygen content of the protective gas or the partial pressure of the oxygen can be detected with a comparatively high sensitivity by means of suitable analysis devices, so that any changes in the oxygen content of the resulting Shielding gas or the oxygen partial pressure in the glow chamber, the gas tightness of the glow chamber can be checked with sufficient accuracy. All that is required is a lowering of the protective gas pressure relative to the pressure in the furnace chamber, which can be achieved by lowering the protective gas pressure and / or increasing the pressure in the furnace chamber. Since this reduction of the excess pressure of the protective gas to ensure a negative pressure in relation to the furnace chamber can be carried out with comparatively little effort and at short notice, the furnace operation is hardly affected by this checking of the gas tightness of the annealing chamber, especially since the changes in the oxygen content of the shielding gas or the oxygen partial pressure also occur Can be easily and accurately determined with the help of at least one lambda probe. This creates advantageous prerequisites for being able to intervene in a timely manner if leaks occur by regularly checking the gas tightness of the glow chamber.

2In order to ensure sufficient oxygen entry through the leaks for measuring the change in the oxygen content of the shielding gas or the oxygen partial pressure in the annealing chamber, a corresponding pressure drop between the furnace chamber and the annealing chamber must be ensured If the annealing chamber is at least 3 mbar, preferably at least 5 mbar, in relation to the pressure in the furnace chamber, the change in the oxygen content of the protective gas when leaks occur can be detected with sufficient certainty. 2

Claims (3)

AT 409 187 B The method according to the invention for checking the gas tightness of the glow space of a furnace for the heat treatment of metallic annealing material is explained in more detail using the example of a tower furnace, which is shown in a schematic longitudinal section. The tower furnace shown for the heat treatment of metal strips has a frame 1 which carries a housing 2 with a refractory lining 3, into which a muffle 4 is inserted. The lower end of the muffle 4 takes place via a stopper 5 in a conventional manner, a liquid seal 6 in the form of an annular space surrounding the stopper 7 is provided for the gas-tight connection between muffle 4 and stopper 5, which is sealed with a sealing liquid, e.g. B. oil is filled and into which the lower end of the muffle 4 protrudes. The upper end of the muffle 4, which can be replaced from above into the housing 2, is provided by a stopper 7. For heating the muffle 4, conventional gas burners 8 are used, by means of which the annular space 9 between the muffle 4 and the refractory lining 3 of the housing 2 is heated. The resulting flue gases are removed from the annular space 9 via an exhaust pipe 10. A protective gas is applied to the muffle 4, which can have hydrogen concentrations of up to 100%. A small excess pressure is built up in the glow chamber 11 enclosed by the muffle 4 by means of fans, not shown, which ensures a seal against gases penetrating from the outside. In order to prevent the protective gas from escaping from the glow chamber 11 into the furnace chamber 9 due to this overpressure, the gas tightness of the muffle 4 must be ensured. This can only be ensured by regularly monitoring the gas tightness of the muffle 4. For this purpose, the excess pressure of the protective gas in the glow chamber 11 is reduced to a pressure below the pressure in the furnace chamber 9 by a corresponding control slide or a control flap, so that when there are leaks in the muffle 4 flue gas from the furnace chamber 9 through the leaks in the Glow chamber 11 penetrates. If the gas burners 8 are operated, for example, with natural gas, the flue gases contain approximately 10% carbon dioxide, approximately 20% water vapor and approximately 2% free oxygen, which burns with the hydrogen to form water vapor. The bound and unbound oxygen entering the glow chamber 11 with the flue gas can be determined via at least one lambda probe 12 so that the change in the oxygen content of the protective gas or the partial pressure of the oxygen can be used to monitor the gas tightness of the glow chamber 11. If the output signal of the lambda probe 12 evaluated for reading the gas tightness of the glow chamber 11 on a display 13 does not change when the protective gas pressure in the glow chamber 11 is reduced, the tightness of the glow chamber 11 can be assumed. If the output signal of the lambda probe 12 changes, the tightness of the muffle 4 can no longer be guaranteed due to the increase in the oxygen content of the protective gas or the partial pressure of the oxygen. The lambda probe 12 is preferably used in the region of the cooler adjoining the tower furnace. The application of the method according to the invention is of course not limited to the tower furnace shown. For example, it is not necessary to heat the muffle 4 using gas burners. An electric heater could also be used for this. In this case, to build up a corresponding overpressure in the furnace chamber, compressed air will be blown into the furnace chamber in order to achieve a pressure drop of 5 mbar from the furnace chamber to the furnace chamber which is necessary for checking the tightness of the furnace. For gas-fired hood ovens, a leak test is recommended before removing the furnace hood from the protective hood. The glow chamber pressure under the protective hood is usually 10 mbar. This protective gas pressure is reduced to 3 mbar in order to obtain a corresponding pressure drop between the furnace chamber and the glow chamber at a conventional pressure in the furnace hood of 8 mbar.
