<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The invention relates to a switchable heat exchanger, in particular for an internal combustion engine, with a transmission part through which a first transmission medium flows and which can be thermally coupled to a second transmission medium.
In order to keep emissions and consumption as low as possible, there are numerous suggestions for shortening the warm-up phase after the cold start of an engine. Known systems use oil or water heat exchangers or an electrical auxiliary heater to heat up the oil or water circuit.
It is known to use the exhaust gas heat for oil heating to shorten the warm-up phase after the cold start. An oil / exhaust gas heat exchanger is known from US 4,458,642 A, with which the exhaust gas heat is supplied to the lubricating oil. However, heat exchangers of this type which are continuously flowed through by oil have the disadvantage that at high exhaust gas temperatures, which occur in particular at high loads, the oil can be coked.
The object of the invention is to avoid this disadvantage and to develop a heat exchanger with which overheating of the transmission medium is avoided.
This is achieved according to the invention in that the heat exchanger has a mechanical switching device, the transmission part having a first surface which can be brought into contact with a second surface thermally connected to the second transmission medium by means of a switching operation. The mechanical switching device can mechanically interrupt the heat transfer between the two transfer media, so that overheating of the transfer media is effectively prevented. It can be provided that the switching movement is translatory or rotary.
In order to achieve good heat transfer between the first and second surfaces in the simplest possible manner, it is provided that the first and second surfaces are essentially flat. It is very advantageous if the transmission part has a heat exchanger plate.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In a particularly preferred embodiment variant, it is provided that the transmission part has an essentially L-shaped cross section, the longer leg of which forms the first surface, it being possible preferably for the transmission part to be pivoted at one end about an axis of rotation . The axis of rotation is arranged on the shorter leg of the L-shaped transmission part.
The switching movement takes place via an actuating device, which preferably engages in the region of the short leg of the L-shaped transmission part.
The first transmission medium can be formed by oil, in particular by lubricating oil of the internal combustion engine. However, any other liquid or gaseous transmission medium is also possible.
According to a very simple and effective variant of the invention, it is provided that the second surface is formed by a contact plate which is thermally firmly connected to the second transmission medium. It is very advantageous if the contact plate is viewed in a side view, is essentially L-shaped, and the transmission part is rotatably mounted on the shorter leg of the L-shaped contact plate. The contact plate, which is expediently formed by a thermally highly conductive metal, can be firmly connected by welding, screwing or the like to a body containing the second transmission medium, so that subsequent installation is also possible.
In an extremely preferred embodiment variant of the invention it is provided that the second surface is formed by the exhaust pipe or a contact plate which is thermally firmly connected to it. The oil circuit can thus be separated from the exhaust gas via the actuating device as soon as the exhaust gas temperature assumes a critical value. As long as the component temperature of the exhaust pipe does not lead to oil coking, the mechanical switching device remains closed. However, when a temperature critical for the oil is reached, the mechanical switching device is opened.
The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the figures.
1 shows a heat exchanger according to the invention in one
Section, Fig. 2 shows the heat exchanger from Fig. 1 in a plan view, Fig. 3 and 4 oblique views of the heat exchanger with two different
Switch positions.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The switchable heat exchanger 1 has a mechanical switching device 2 with a first surface 4 arranged on a transmission part 3 and a second surface 6 formed by a contact plate 5.
The transmission part 3 has an L-shaped cross section with a short leg 3a and a long leg 3b designed as a heat exchanger plate 30. The first surface 4 is formed by the long leg 3b of the transmission part 3. In the area of the short leg 3a, the transmission part 3 is connected to an inflow line 7 and an outflow line 8.
The transmission part 3 is rotatably mounted about an axis of rotation 9 arranged in the region of the short leg 3a. The rotational movement of the transmission part 3 is initiated by an actuating device 10 acting on the transmission part 3 in the region of the short leg 3a. The flow of the first transmission medium is indicated by arrows 11.
The contact plate 5 is fixedly connected to an exhaust gas line 12, through which the second transmission medium 13 formed by exhaust gas flows, as indicated by the arrow. The contact plate 5 likewise has an L-shaped cross section with a short leg 5a and a long leg 5b, the axis of rotation 9 being supported by the fork-shaped short leg 5a.
1 and 3, the mechanical switching device 2 is shown in the open position, the first surface 4 and the second surface 6 being spaced apart from one another. FIG. 4 shows the mechanical switching device 2 in the closed position, in which the first surface 4 and the second surface 6 are thermally connected to one another.
As long as the temperature of the exhaust gas line 12 does not lead to oil coking in the area where the heat exchanger 1 is installed, the mechanical switching device 1 is held in the switching position shown in FIG. 4.
When a temperature critical for the oil is reached, the mechanical switching device 2 is opened, so that the thermal connection between the first and the second transmission medium 11, 13 is interrupted. This effectively protects the oil from coking.
