Abstract

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of novel alpha-aminohydroxyalkyl nitriles of the general formula VI in which R1 is a straight-chain or branched alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms and R2 is a straight-chain or branched alkyl radical having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, which carries a primary or secondary hydroxyl group, in which a ketone of the general formula VII in which R1 and R2 have the above meaning is reacted with ammonia and cyanide ions in the presence of an ammonium halide in a solvent, and the amino nitrile VI obtained in this way is removed and extracted from the resulting residue if desired with an organic solvent. The novel compounds, e.g. 2-amino-5-hydroxy-2- methylvaleronitrile of melting point 52degreeC, are valuable starting materials for the preparation (by oxidation with, for example, chlorine or hypochlorite) of azo initiators for free-radical polymerization. <IMAGE>
