Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

The invention relates to the production of compositions, in particular compositions based on a synthetic polymer and starch.

According to the invention, it was found that the starch can be used as a vehicle to introduce various modifying substances into the plastic compositions, such as fire-retardant substances, smoke-suppressing substances, fertilizers, plant nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates, and insecticides and the like. the like

The invention accordingly relates to a process for producing a composition based on plastic, comprising a synthetic polymer and starch granules, which is characterized in that the starch granules are dissolved in a solution of a substance which modifies the properties of the composition, in a solvent which is not a solvent for the starch granules are suspended, the solvent evaporates, leaving a coating of the modifying substance on the granules, and the coated starch granules are mixed with the synthetic polymer.

The evaporation can expediently take place in the course of methods known per se, for example by spray drying, or the modifying substance in solution can be mixed with the starch, which is held in the form of a fluidized bed by a gas stream which is at a temperature approximately the drying temperature is located, with a coating of the modifying substance remains on the starch granules.

Example: plastic / starch composition containing a flame retardant as a modifying substance
A slurry of corn starch in water was made by suspending 220 g of undried corn starch in 1 liter of water. Sufficient ammonium molybdate was then dissolved in the aqueous suspension so that a final concentration of 12% by weight, based on the weight of the starch, was obtained. This slurry was introduced into the spray system of a laboratory spray dryer with compressed air of 4 bar and an air inlet temperature in the chamber of 165 C and an outlet temperature of 65 C.

The product drawn off from the outlet cyclone was a free-flowing dry white powder, which was used to fill a

heated two-roll mill at 150 C. The product in the form of a plate approximately 2.5 mm thick gave much less smoke in the combustion test compared to a similar composition which did not contain ammonium molybdate. The starch granules can be hydrophobicized in accordance with the teaching of GB-PS No. 1,487, 050.

    PATENT CLAIMS:
1. A process for producing a plastic-based composition comprising a synthetic polymer and starch granules, characterized in that the starch granules are suspended in a solution of a substance which modifies the properties of the composition in a solvent which is not a solvent for the starch granules. the solvent evaporates, leaving a coating of the modifying substance on the granules, and the coated starch granules are mixed with the synthetic polymer.
