<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The invention relates to a method for injection molding, plastic being plasticized and transferred into an antechamber from which it is injected into at least one mold cavity.
The plasticization of thermoplastic material is usually carried out by means of a screw, at the same time the plasticized material is conveyed into the space in front of the screw that migrates back. At the top of the screw there is a non-return valve, which makes it possible to use the plasticizing or conveyor screw as an injection piston.
The problem on which the invention is based occurs when small parts are to be injected with normal injection molding machines, the screw diameter of which is not less than 25 mm, since many users do not want to buy a special machine for this special case 32 g, the lowest values currently practically achievable being 0.8 g. Such small parts are often to be manufactured with high precision. The difficulty limiting the accuracy has been found to be to meter such small amounts.
The rotation and feed of the screw conveyor can be precisely controlled, but the non-return valve is controlled by the pressure of the plastic, which means that if the flow rates are too low, the volume actually supplied can only be determined by inferring from the measured end position of the screw . If it is found that this volume is not sufficient to fill the mold cavities to create a material cushion for the reprint, an error signal is issued.
The object of the invention is to make the limited accuracy when metering material less effective even with small shot weights. This is achieved in that at the beginning of the injection process, the volume of the antechamber is at least twice as large as the common volume of the mold cavities, and the mold cavities are filled at least twice in succession without metering in between.
The method according to the invention is all the more effective the more the amount supplied between the one-time opening and closing of the non-return valve, the shot weight
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
exceeds. It is therefore preferably provided that in each case a volume which is at least ten times as large as the common volume of the mold cavities is plasticized under one and transferred into the antechamber. However, it must be taken into account that an excessively long dwell time of the plasticized plastic can damage it, so that the multiplication of the anteroom compared to the mold volume cannot be carried out as far as desired.
The method according to the invention can be carried out on any conventional injection molding device. Therefore, only the process-essential parts of an injection molding device are shown and described.
In the device shown, thermoplastic material is plasticized in the cylinder 8 by a screw 5 and thereby reaches the antechamber 1. This extends almost through the holes 13 to the form 7. Its front opening 14 can be closed off to the form 7 by means of a shut-off 2 , whereas backflow of the plastic from the antechamber 1 is prevented by a non-return valve 6 at the tip of the screw 5.
An essential functional part of the barrier 2 is, in a manner known per se, a locking needle 9 which, under the pressure of the plastic in the anteroom 1, tends to move to the right in the drawing. In the closing direction, the needle 9 is acted upon by a lever 11 which can be pivoted about the bolt 10 and which is under the action of a controllable hydraulic unit 12.
It is essential for the invention that between the opening and closing of the non-return valve 6 so much material is conveyed into the antechamber 1 that this is sufficient for at least two, typically for at least ten fillings of the mold cavity 3. Inaccuracies in metering are therefore of little importance since the position of the screw as a whole, and thus the injection process, is not associated with the inaccuracy associated with metering.
